Retirement sleep

I thought retirement would be great, but along came the covid pandemic, etc.

Now i get reflux two hours after falling asleep. Stopped eating two hours before bed to try to alleviate it. A glass of milk an hour before bed, (remembering as children). Then directly7 before bed. No, hughie...it comes.

Anyone got similar and found results, other than permanent gaviscon?

NHS advice includes raising the head in bed and not eating within 3-4 hours of going to bed. This Healthline link has further suggestions:

Read Dr.Kaufman's Acid Reflux Diet to optimise your alkaline food intake and minimise acidic foods..Also no food 4 hours before bed is best.Good luck.

Symprove probiotic really helps both mine and my husband's indigestion. Might be worth a try.

I agree with Joolsg. I had acid reflux at night. Started taking a good probiotic and haven't had any issues since.

red wine, chocolate especially dark, fizzy drinks, mint, tomatoes, fatty greasy foods, onions, garlic are just some of the foods that can cause acid reflux. It’s all trial and error to find out which ones. Mastika (mastic gum) is one of the best things to take to heal your gut but you need to take it for a couple of months. You should try not eating 4 hours before going to bed and sleep on your left side with the bed raised at the top end.

Interestingly, it’s my impression that all those foods you mention also tend to trigger RLS. Perhaps there’s a connection..? 🤔

I often have to eat something before sleeping because I can’t sleep hungry, but find that some crisp bread is the least offensive option.

thanks to every one of you. you may not have been mentioned, but last night i tried to sleep on LHS, extra pillow, no food between 7.30 and midnight. An improvement for even one night, but had to fiddle 1/2 extra pillows. 2 withheld sleep, so i do have an extra pillow. I will try that probiotic when next shopping (Is that the benecol drink?)

Similar to others. I experience reflux more as I get older although still infrequent . I find it helps to eat earlier, eat moderate amounts, reduce alcohol, ensure you get enough fibre so you have good transit and stay hydrated. Losing weight and in particular visceral fat around the gut might help reduce the feeling of being full. Lastly exercise helps gut motility and walking is wonderful for almost every part of your body.

You may consider that you have SIBO (Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth). It is associated with higher levels of RLS. I was never tested but just assumed I had it. Used the herbal cure (4 drops oil of oregano in a carrier oil, garlic, and berberine) 4 weeks on 2 weeks off. GERD was so bad my teeth hurt!

Hi,

_ how is your sleep?

_ just in case you may want to see the book (sleep interrupted) and web google articles of Dr. Steven Park, who explain some types of reflux and SDB .

all the best and good luck

My reflux went away completely when I became really strict about diet. No bread or cheese ever! In fact no gluten, dairy (eggs and butter okay) sugar or alcohol plus a cup of high quality kefir everyday. It’s hard but lots of things cleared up. Unfortunately not rls although that has become a lot easier to control.
