rotary cuff tear and rls

I dislocated my shoulder and it looks like I will have to have surgery. I have been reading about rotary cuff surgery and it could be a long recovery with a lot of pain. I am worried about having rls after the surgery. Im not sure how the orthopedic feels about pain meds. I am now taking oxycodone and mirapex. sometimes it helps, sometimes not. The oxycodone does not help me with other types of pain. So I am hoping the orthopedic dr. will give me a different stronger pain med and i will not take the oxycodone. I know I am jumping the gun because i dont see the ortho til Tues. I can't help but worry about how my rls will be after the surgery. When I fell and dislocated my shoulder, my rls got worse for a while. Anyone out there have any experience with this.

Thanks.

Hi yes I had rotator cuff surgery ,unfortunately in my case it was unsuccessful and I have my pre op assessment on Monday to have it done again. I have the surgery done awake under an anaesthetic block (you don't feel a thing ) this eliminates the need for antisickness meds which are often needed after a general anaesthetic. If you do need antisickness meds insist on Zofran as most others worsen RLS.Tell this to nurses ,surgeon and particularly the anesthetist.i use Morphine for pain and RLS and half a Neupro patch. On discharge (which was 6 hours after the surgery I was given Codeine to come home with .I also used ibuprofen. I used a sliing for a while and had physiotherapy. I was back driving within 2 weeks and I rushed my recovery which may be why mine failed so make sure to follow your surgeons advice .Good luck Pipps x

I always tell them at the hospital about zofran. It seems that whenever I have a procedure done, I get rls afterwards. Last time I had a catherization, when I was done the rls set in. I told the nurse I had to get up. She would not let me. My legs were going crazy. I kept asking the nurse to let me up. I felt fine. Well the anxiety sent by blood pressure up to 220. It was a nightmare. I told her the reason my blood pressure went up was because I had to move. I hope that doesnt happen this time. I will have a trial run next week because I am have a stone removed. Boy am I a mess!!!

When you are ready for your surgery be sure to tell your doctors and anesthesiologists about your RLS and its symptoms and that you need your medicine and ask if there will be any drug interactions from what they will give you. Also talk with the patient representative ahead of time. Tell them not to give you any sedating antihistamines or sedating anti-nausea medications. Instead insist they use Zofran (ondansetron) for anti-nausea. You can download the Medical Alert Card that you can show your doctors, that tells them about the condition and what will happen after surgery and what medicines to avoid at rlshelp.org/ although you will need to join the RLS foundation. An international membership is $40, but they have some good information on it and you get their monthly magazine. However the safe antidepressants listed on medical alert card are not antidepressants: Lamotrigine, Carbamazepine, Oxcarbazepine.

yes I dislocated my shoulder and all the tendons were torn off. I had a reverse shoulder replacement and they gave me a nerve block and general anaesthetic. Good luck.

When I had a replacement knee I had to stand very quickly after the op as RLS kicked in. I couldn’t have more anymore pain relief due to being on OxyContin but they gave me an injection of diazepam which worked for me. The secret is to forewarn them before the operation both nurses and anaesthetists
