Neurologist- Scotland

I was diagnosed with RLS about 5 months ago. My GP has prescribed Pregabalin but this is not giving me relief from severe pain in my feet. The pain is worse during the night and results in long periods of extreme discomfort and insomnia.I am now looking for help from a private Neurologist who has knowledge of and experience in the treatment of RLS.

Can any members please provide me with a recommendation. I am willing to travel for a consultation but would prefer to stay in Scotland.

I see Dr O’Leary, a neurologist at Glasgow Ross Hall privately.

Thanks Scottie99,I have realised that not many GPs have experience of RLS and was advised to seek the help of a Neurologist who does have experience with RLS .

Do you find that your Neurologist has the detailed knowledge of RLS to be able to give you the best advice and treatment.

Do you feel you have benefitted significantly from having private consultations with your Neurologist.

I wouldn’t say his knowledge was all encompassing but he is much more aware than any GP.

I was on Ropinerole for over 15 years and he recently agreed I should wean off it and go on gabapentine.

That said although I’m down from 4mg per day to 0.5, I am not totally convinced that gabapentine is the answer to me.

I certainly think he is worth a try. I think he charges around £150 for a consultation

Prof. Walker at Queen Sq London does phone consultations so you don't need to travel. RLS can be fully diagnosed and treated by a verbal case history initially. Bloods can be done by your local GP.Prof. Walker will consider iron infusions and low dose opioids and if the pregabalin is not helping with pain, adding a small dose of another med may help.

Thanks again Joolsg for your valuable guidance. I am having difficulty finding a Neurologist, locally, who specialises in RLS treatments. Therefore, I may opt for a telephone consultation as you suggest.....
