USA Iron Infusion billing code E83.1

I finally got an iron infusion approved for tomorrow. The doc put request in for anemia but I got the correct billing code from the RLS Foundation:E83.1 Disorder of iron metabolism, unspecified.

Excludes1: iron deficiency anemia/ sideroblastic anemia

E83

Excludes1: dietary mineral deficiency/ parathyroid disorders/ vitamin D deficiency.

My husband said maybe Drs are reluctant to treat us with infusions because they don't know there is a proper code just for us. They are reluctant to put a code that doesn't exactly fit.... That's probably why she got it pre-approved for anemia.

If your Dr is giving you a hard time share the research and this billing code with them !

I’ve had severe RLS for years. I’ve been in this forum several months and have read several people mention this. One women’s name is Sue and she seems highly intelligent and very knowledgeable about this treatment. My question is does it work ? If so how long? What is the cost? Does Medicare cover it? Thank you.

Hi, from the iron infusion clinic! I'm sitting here getting it right now ;)Yes, Medicare should cover infusions.... I know Medicaid does for sure. The infusions are the only thing that has worked for me. There is a lot of research recently about it helping our condition. I think it's worth trying! I hope you can get a consultation and explore whether you are a candidate. They will check your ferritin & saturation levels first. Some Drs might say you can't get an infusion if you are not clinically anemic (under 6) but show them the research about RLS patients having an iron metabolism disorder and that we have different iron requirements than anemia patients. 💗
