Thank you to everyone who made the effort to comment. My wonderful daughter found this site.

I am impressed and amazed. I've had RLS for over 30 years, or more, can't remember not having it.

Head of the queue not to eat is spinach. Guess what is one of my all time favourites. Soy is on the list - I have had soy milk for over 30 years as I'm moderately lactose intolerant. I have to laugh at the possibility I've given myself more punishment than necessary. A2 milk is my next venture. Tried rice milk, sorry but disgusting. Tried almond milk, couldn't get my taste buds to cooperate.

I'm going to try the gentle iron every 2nd night. I've been anaemic before so the bound iron made a lot of sense to me. I'll be positive and say when it works, I will report back in a month - either way. I'm just pretty excited to have so much information to work with and feel that there is relief in sight, yay.

Thank you all again

Goodday.

Great to hear from the real you!

Keeping a food diary is very useful.

I use "lactose free" milk which is freely available here in Ireland.

Good luck

I see you are taking ropinirole. How much are you taking? It apparently is not controlling your RLS. Has it in the past?

Motchi profile image
Motchi in reply to SueJohnson

not me, I've never even heard of ropinirole. I'm the one just started on a statin and not having a bad time with that.

SueJohnson profile image
SueJohnson in reply to Motchi

I don't know where I got that. I usually check people's profile, but no one on this thread takes ropinirole.

I see you just started taking a statin. Statins make RLS worse in most people. If you find that is the case, post back here and I can suggest a substitute.

OK , thanks Sue, I am definitely interested in something that can reduce my heart calcium that is not chemical.

Triglide - seems safe and -NEXLIZET is a cholesterol lowering drug that is not a statin. I haven't found anything that shows it exacerbates RLS symptoms. Ezetimibe (Zetia) - per Chris Columbus doesn't reduce cholesterol as fast as the statins, but didn't trigger his RLS. FDA does show it increases RLS for some. Of course the best way to reduce cholesterol is to go on a vegan diet. My husband did this and reduced his cholesterol from 221 to 131. Discuss these with your doctor.

I'm going to be prescribed a statin and high blood pressure medication. Do you know of any substitutes for either.? Thanks for your advice previously, which has been very helpful.

For high blood pressure propranolol (Inderal, Hemangeol,InnoPran) seems safe and there is Isosorbide Mononitrate (Monoket, Imdur) which is not a beta blocker nor calcium channel blocker. And then there are the ace inhibitors such as Zestril (Lisinopril, Qbrelis, Prinivil) and Perindopril (Coversyl). Other possibilities are: Clonidine (Catapres) an Alpha-2-Agonist used to treat high blood pressure, insomnia and ADHD (not a stimulant) and may help RLS, tenex (Guanfacine, Intuniv) treats adhd and high blood pressure, prazosin (Minipress) - alpha-adrenergic blocker that treats high blood pressure; useful in managing sleep-related problems caused by PTSD and Tadalafil (Cialis, Adcirca), a Vasodilator that treats erectile dysfunction, enlarged prostate, and high blood pressure - in one study completely eliminated RLS. If the problem is high cholesterol,Discuss these with your doctor.

Some things that can make RLS symptoms worse for some people are alcohol, nicotine, caffeine, sugar, carbs, foods high in sodium, foods that cause inflammation, ice cream, estrogen, dehydration, MSG, collagen supplements, electrolyte imbalance, melatonin, stress and vigorous exercise. Some things that help some people include caffeine, moderate exercise, weighted blankets, compression socks, elastic bandages, masturbation, magnesium glycinate, low oxalate diet, selenium, 5 minute shower alternating 20 seconds cold water with 10 seconds hot water finishing with hot water for another couple of minutes, hot baths, distractions, applying a topical magnesium lotion or spray, doing a magnesium salts soak, vitamins B1, B3, B6, B12, D3, K2, if deficient, and potassium and copper if deficient, massage including using a massage gun, using a standing desk, listening to music, meditation and yoga.

I’ve suffered with since a child I’m 47 now!! Gave up on pharmaceutical drugs due to side effects so found a supplement called magnesium and the results for me have been so profound I’ve had one episode in 3 years!! Take the same brand once a day without fail and the change has been amazing…I too also changed my milk to “oat milk” which for me was tricky as I’ve always enjoyed cows milk but had to try an alternative and tastes great in drinks!

Wishing you all the very best on yr journey and keep up updated 🥰🥰

Hi RedRobin46,it's great to hear stories like yours, was just wondering if you are on any meds for any other conditions as I believe some necessary meds do make RLS worse. Can you please tell me the brand of the Magnesium you take.

RedRobin46 profile image
RedRobin46 in reply to Whymelord

So I used to take amytriptiline (apologies for incorrect spelling) but as I take other meds it made me so groggy the next day and worked it all this medication did was knock me out!

So I also take (pharmaceuticals) Levothyroxine, MST Continus, Pregabalin, Candestartan, (non pharmaceuticals) Magnesium, Zinc, NAC, Cayenne Pepper, Tumeric.

One a day I take at night 6pm.

I noticed pregabalin on your list. That is used to treat RLS so it is likely that is having some effect.

Hi RedRobin46 thankyou for replying,my question was a bit personal, sorry about that but I'm aware that certain meds exacerbate RLS,I too am on Pregablin as well as bloodpressure tabs and Atorvastatin for high Cholesterol.I must try the Magnesium and the oatmilk as everything is wort a try especially if it's a natural remedy.

hey no worries it’s absolutely fine…I chose the highest absorption of magnesium and tried to find a brand with minimal caking and bulking agents. I wish you luck with trying them. They have been a lifesaver for me and recommend them to everyone who suffers from RLS.

SueJohnson profile image
SueJohnson in reply to RedRobin46

I'm surprised that the Levothyroxine and Candestartan don't make your RLS worse as they do for many people.

RedRobin46 profile image
RedRobin46 in reply to SueJohnson

I’ve been on Levothyroxine for around 8 years and the blood pressure medication about a year but RLS I’ve had since a early teenage years…maybe the pregabalin helps which I’ve been on for many years I’ve no idea 🤷‍♀️ it’s not unreasonable to say that different medications can make RLS worse, all I’ve noticed is that for me, Magnesium has worked and I’m so thankful that I can rest.

That is great that the magnesium works.

I had to join in here - supplements etc are a waste of time and money. Restless legs is connected to the nervous system and the only 'supplement' that might work is iron. However, you first need a blood test for ferritin as you can't just buy iron pills in the supermarket - they don't work. Ferritin is also linked to dopamine in the brain - you need to see a neurologist in order to be set on the right path, unfortunately you'll get a load of expensive bad advice online. People will recommend all sorts of pills and potions that only work as placebos. Each one of us is different - your RLS may be helped by the right iron pills, mine (of 50 years standing) wasn't. In the end, unfortunately, drugs may be the only way forward but you may want to explore your options with the neurologist. Accidentally I found Tramadol (works on nerve pain) after I had an operation and found my RLS much diminished. I still fall back on it after 15 years .......... and, no, I've never been addicted. The main group of drugs are focused on dopamine and people have mixed views about them. They work like magic but can be problematic later on. I can only say again that you need to see a doctor, don't rely on others recommending weird diets or special food - they will never work on real RLS.
