iron supplements
It's important that you have your ferritin checked before taking iron. Ask your doctor for a full iron panel. Fast after midnight and have your test in the morning when your ferritin is lowest. Don't take any iron supplements for 48 hours before the test. Ask for your transferrin percentage (TSAT) and your ferritin. You want your TSAT to be between 20 and 45 and your ferritin to be over 100. When you get the results, post them here and we can advise you on what to do next.
I take 3,000-5,000 mg magnesium citrate.
Many people have found Ferrous Bisglycinate Chelate to be the best oral supplement to raise iron levels for RLS. It has very few side effects (non constipating). Take Sue's advise and get a complete iron panel prior to taking supplements. FBC is a patented formula so any brand will contain the same item. I took 18 mg - but there are other brands with slightly more. This is the one I took... $6US. For me it totally took away the severe RLS in a month.
I use magnesium and it works well.. dont know about Iron.
I would have to disagree about its being non constipating, but taking stool softeners and a bran muffin helps with that. It’s a long process though. It’s taken me 6 months to bring my ferritin from 25 up to 60, but even that has caused an improvement in the RLS.
Very grateful for this group. Your experience, knowledge and sympathy have eased the journey for so many.
(Still worried tho about our previously omnipresent friend with his vast knowledge and generosity in sharing it. I do hope he’s ok. Anyone know anything?)
