In pure health terms I'd say fresh veg not covered in pesticide residues. Not that I find these a satisfying 'snack' myself you understand, I'd much rather go with something with more sugars/carbs/fats, but do as I say not as I do! 😉

I would knock dates and grapes off that list straight away necause they tend to be high in sugar especially modern varieties of grapes, and I would limit dark chocolate to one or two squares a day. If you keep your carb intake down you very seldom get the urge to snack.

A small handful of nuts, like 5-10 pieces of walnuts, are packed with healthy Omega 3 fats. An oat/banana/ peanut butter square is a healthy snack, complex carbs are good for you, take the seed out of dates and pack a walnut inside. Yeah, dates have sugars as all fruits do, but they are loaded with antioxidents and fiber which offset and make those sugars healthy. Sugar--glucose--is what your bodies cells run on, carrot sticks and sliced peppers, dipped in hummus, nut butter, or guacamole, are healthy. A recent study concluded you can add 14 healthy years to your life at age 20, 8 at age 60, and 5 at age 80 by switching to a mostly plant-based diet such as Mediterranean, or better yet, totally plant based with lots of potatoes, beans, whole grains, nuts, veggies and fruit. I switched at age 40 and am now active and healthy at age 85.

Different foods are healthy for RLS depending on what foods you are allergic or intolerant toward.

For general health it seems that not much fat and avoid as much sugar as you can seem to be a good starting point. I have not seen any reliable statistics that indicate that veges or vegans live longest but it wouldn't surprise me. My carnivorous friends would say vegetarians dont live longer it just feels longer. There are so many possible rules but its so hard to conduct whole of life experiments to be certain. Imagine if you gave up chocolate milk shakes for your entire life and then found that the experiment you were part of had just proved that you did the wrong thing.

Its easy to joke about these things but we all know that major food suppliers do their research to find out what makes us eat too much rather than what's good for us.

If RLS is wrecking your life then do a few experiments to find out if there are any foods that you should avoid to get a good nights sleep. Something as simple as lactose is one of my strong triggers. Its easy to give up lactose if you can prove its part of your problem.

Hi, I'd be careful with the cheese as it's high in glutamate and thus can irritate RLS. I definitely find it does. However, not everyone is triggered by the same things. I find a banana and a drink of lactose free milk works well, or nuts with raisins. Usually if I'm craving sweet things then only something sweet will work so a few raisins. I often add a glass of milk to lower the rate of absorption of the sugars... and a magnesium tablet to help the sugars digest. (I'm not a great scientist, but from what I understand, sugar uses a lot of magnesium in the digestion process so if I add a bit more, I think it helps. I agree with Eryl about grapes. You can eat an awful lot of these before being 'satisfied' and they are very high in sugar. Humus and vegetable sticks are a great snack for afternoon tea... take a long time to munch through and very tasty humus. However, as Graham says, you really have to find what suits you and doesn't aggravate your legs. Good luck. :)
