Horizant and Burning Mouth Syndrome

Just when you think you’re getting a break…….so the Horizant is helping my RLS and I’m sleeping ok again finally but lately I noticed some BMS, Burning Mouth Syndrome.

I had this before for almost a year due to an allergy to dental metals in my mouth. Three dentists told me it wasn’t possible but when I finally had the metals removed ( at my own insistence) (wires for orthodontics) the BMS disappeared.

Now it’s starting to raise its ugly head again and I’m thinking it might be the Horizant, which is sometimes actually prescribed for BMS.

Any other Horizant users about who might have had similar experiences?

The Horizant helps my RLS about 70% and still working on upping my ferritin levels but seriously, it’s typical, just when I feel I’m finally getting a break something else pops up.

Thanks as always for your advice. This group is helping to educate my GP too and thankfully she’s very open to my (your) suggestions.

Sorry to say, that BMS can be caused by some drugs though not from what I read Horizant.

I guess the only way to show it is by stopping the Horizant and starting it again to see if the BMS goes away and comes back again.

You could also try switching to Lyrica or Neurontin, to see if that makes a difference.

I do appreciate what you're suffering, I'm currently taking a medication that can cause oral mucositis, a similar condition, but what I actually have is more like BMS. I'm struggling to eat!

Thanks so much. My doc didn’t think it was the Horizant so maybe I’ll just hang in there and hope it’ll subside a bit. It’s hard to remain positive at times, one thing on top of another but this group really helps so thank you. I hope you get some relief soon.

Hi, I'm not on Horizant, so I am not really answering your question, but as someone who has also had BMS I just wanted to say that I know how utterly miserable this condition can be. And it feels like a joke to have too not very serious sounding syndromes: RLS and BMS when between them they really mess your life up big time.I tried avoiding all the foods suggested as triggers and not much seemed to help. I expect you have already done that. I wondered also if it might be the toothpaste I was using / how much I was using so I tried a mint free one. And I stopped using mouth wash. I don't know if it was that, but in the end the burning mouth did go. I am now back to standard toothpaste so the jury is out on that. No mouth wash tho! And I am ultra careful to avoid spicy foods etc as this seemed to trigger a short bout at a later date. I now occasionally get a minor tingling as if to remind me it is still something I need to be careful of. Sorry not to be more directly helpful in terms of the medication. Sue

I’ve been sucking on ice and avoiding anything acidic. Yogurt and baking soda help a little and I’m looking into some supplements that’s I’ve heard mentioned a few times for BMS.. It’s manageable but very annoying. I’m going to be 45 this year and a friend just pointed out it could be peri menopausal. Wahey……more things to look forward to. That’s a tendency to try and link everything and sometimes that’s just not the case. I think one of things that helps me is to remain calm ( easier said than done) and even try and distract yourself as much as you can. Thanks for you support and it was very helpful and gave me hope ❤️

I have taken Horizant for several years, and I have not experienced the symptoms that you describe. The Horizant helps my restless leg and insomnia somewhat, and I hope it is helping the neuropathy in my feet. Good luck with finding a solution.
