I was taking high doses of melatonin every night such as 3g.
I've read that it could inhibit dopamine. I've stopped for now taking that melatonin because my RLS has been increasing a lot!! Ang guess what? After 3 days, for the first night I got it only in the middle of the night and I went for a cold shower on my legs and it was ok for the whole night.
Ok I had to wait for 3 night to see any effect but I'm so relieved.
I hope it's not going to be one of...

3mg of melatonin is way too much. An effective dose would be nearer to 0.3mg to 0.5mg. The high rates of melatonin were recommended based on outdated research. As usual ,the medical authorities have failed to keep up with science.Certainly, melatonin does cause rls, so I just take a tiny dose( about 0.25- 0.3 ) occasionally. And never for more than 3 nights running.
How do I achieve such small doses? Get it in liquid form and use a dropper to subdivide the dose.
I agree win Madlegs - really small doses 0.25 - 0.5 mg is all I use (and I rarely use it anymore). I get a sublingual tablet of 1mg. and break it into 4 pieces of approximately 0.25. Even this small dose can cause me to be groggy in the AM with vivid dreams.
I took one dose of melatonin 300 mcg (0.3 mg) last week. It gave me only one hour of sleep, and it made my symptoms much worse. I'm getting better, but I'm still not back to my pre-melatonin state. Please be careful.
