Anyone tried the vibration plate calfs massage?

Hello everyone,

Hope you are all well and safe.

I suffer with restless legs for the past 4 years. I am not taking any medication for it as my GP said I am a bit young to take such strong medication. However, I have tried lots of different things to ease the symptoms but not many worked so far.

As an almost instant relief, I found the heat rub quite good, but only for 30 min or so. Still good enough especially at bed time.

I don’t know if many of you do, but between the urge to move my legs, I have a very weird sensation in my calfs which is quite depressing. I get that day and night, wakes me up in the middle of the night so my sleeping pattern is quite bad.

It’s vert annoying especially when you have work next day.

Recently I’ve purchased a vibration plate to engage the muscles. I have used it for my calfs for 10 min and the result was amazing! The weird, annoying and stressful sensation instantly faded and did not return at bed time nor over night . No kicking legs at all . I had the best sleep ever.

Not sure how safe safe this is for my bulging and disk degeneration in my lower back but hope it’s safe enough to use it for my legs.

Let me know if you’ve tried the vibration plate and what was the outcome on a long term.

Thanks a lot.

Take care and stay safe.

I use a percussive hammer vibrator, which works well to relieve 'tired muscles'. It only gives distraction effects for RLS.It sounds like some of your symptoms are maybe related to salt or neuropathic issues- venous flow?? I'm not expert enough to diagnose, but you also appear to have other health issues which may well be affecting you.

All the best.

Thank you for taking your time to reply. It is quite possible to be related with venous flow. I usually get the symptoms when I stand up, sit for a prolonged time, cross legs or bend knees whilst laying down.

All the best to you too.

Delighted it’s helped you. I bought a Revitive vibrating foot plate a few years ago hoping it would help but it actually triggered RLS every time I used it. I sold it on ebay so didn’t lose too much money. Like many things- what works for one person doesn’t necessarily help everyone but it’s definitely worth trying.

Thanks a lot. I agree with you 100%. So for works well but on a long run no idea. I guess I have to keep experimenting to maintain the condition since I might have to live forever with this syndrome.

Start by ensuring your serum ferritin is above 100, preferably 250 as raising levels will dramatically improve RLS in 60% of sufferers. Also check you’re not on meds ( including OTC meds) that worsen it like anti depressants and anti histamines. Read all the posts from the last month and replies and you’ll learn so much about this horrible disease.

Good luck.

I tried a tens machine for arthritis pain some years ago, and that triggered my RLS. I was glad somebody lent it to me before I went out and bought one, saved me some money. I borrowed a foot spa later on, which also triggered my RLS. I also tried meditation/relaxation with a group, which had every nerve in my body jingling and I had to leave the room and jog for a good five minutes before things quietened down.

Sounds like me in my old yoga class. The bit at the end of the class where you have to lie still in the corpse pose..... I couldn’t stay still & had to get up.

Great to hear that the vibration pad works for you. You are quite right to avoid drugs as long as you can.

Do have your ferritin checked as Jools suggests

Also, from what you write it sounds as if not all your symptoms are due to RLS.

I'd say at least they're partly due to spinal neuropathy. Quite often it appears to me that when people with RLS get new symptoms, especially changes in sensation they blame it on their RLS which isn''t always necessarily the case.

Thank you so much. I will definitely have the ferritin checked as soon as possible. I guess I may need to push my GP to investigate further.

I also have a feeling is something else as well not just RLS. If I don’t get the RLS spasms, I get that annoying sensation in my calfs which Is similar to rheumatic pain.

I am an energetic person so I don’t spend lots of time resting but my job also includes sitting a lot and there it comes the trouble. I feel like I need to keep my legs straight almost constantly. I often feel that my lower legs are beginning to get numbed which is obvious for me as well that it could be the venous flow or something else not just RLS.

Venous insufficiency could be an additional problem, but numbness is probably neuropathic.

I'm no doctor so this may sound crazy. I've had painful sensations in my calves that are not due to rls. I have found that they occur when I have eaten too much salt or am dehydrated a little (people rarely know they are dehydrated). My doctor told me to drink some Pedialyte, a baby's drink for needed enzymes etc. It usually works.

Thank you for your recommendation. I will try that. You could be right. I must admit I don’t drink a lot of water especially winter time but I will have to push myself a bit more.

All the best.

I certainly would like to try it, but don't know what it is. Can you please include a photo and further description. Thank you

Unfortunately I haven’t figured it out how to upload a picture but if you google it, you’ll be able to find lots of options on the market. It is called ( vibration plate exercises for total body workout or body fit vibration plate.

It’s a rectangular electrical plate that you stand on it. ( I normally lay onto the floor and put my legs on it for 10 min) Check first if is suitable for you first as it is not recommended for people with some certain medical conditions.

Hope that helps.

I've had RLS for 20 years and take meds. I try to avoid them as much as possible. Within the past five monthsI have been using a percussion instrument like my chiropractor uses on my back to quiet my calves and thighs. It works the effectively 75% of the time and quiets the legs anywhere from 1 hour to all night. Another name for it is deep tissue stimulator. It has a pistol shape with a vibrator where the barrel would be. I've also tried aTENS unit twice. The first night it worked great. I thought I found a silver bullet. The next night the RLS went crazy immediately after I turned it on. I couldn't stand it. So that was the end of it. Good luck

I tried one of those foot plates they advertise on tv, I borrowed one from friend which was good job because it triggered RLS big time. Not again ever.
