Why no chocolate?

Is it the Neupro patch?

Cheers.

I too love chocolate - sadly. It is worth being aware that there is some evidence to suggest that caffeine can help with rls symptoms. It works on the adenosine receptors which are implicated in rls. There are many posts on here from people who find that a cup of coffee can help to settle their rls when it strikes in the night. If you put 'adenosine', 'dipyridamole' and 'rls' into google together they will take you to the most recent study.

That said, chocolate triggers a sort of restlessness in me at night which may or may not be rls related.

Exactly- was angling at that!😛

Did the Dr advise against the choc?

Yes doc said to try and avoid chocolate boo hoo !

No chocolate - even veganism couldn't keep me away from chocolate.

They can take my chocolate from me when they wash it from my cold sticky hands!

I'll try it for a week !!

in reply topilateskid

Give it a few weeks to be sure. No point cutting off a potentially life improving treatment for the sake of a couple of weeks - the majority of side-effects pass after a few weeks and it can take a few weeks to take effect.

IF, and that's a big IF, I can stand it I have the number 6 in my mind so will tr any treatment six weeks to give it a fair chance of working and side-effects passing.

Which ever way you go - Best of luck.

I am a slow reactor. I have found that I give things 12 weeks to work. There have been exceptions and my memory is a bit of a blur going back very far. When I first gave up gluten there was an immediate improvement (one week) that I thought was wonderful. Gradually finding more sources of intolerance brought things up to a survivable level. When I added the FODMAP diet I think it took about 12 weeks to be really good. Some of this time was learning and eating the wrong food or trusting a restaurant. The iron infusion made no positively identified difference until about 14 weeks.

I seem to be drifting in the wrong direction at the moment so I am about to get a measurement of ferritin concentration to see if it has dropped back to an unacceptable level.

I eat 2 squares of dark chocolate & enjoy it with cafetière coffee every day after lunch but strictly before 1:30pm. It only ever affects my RLS cycles if I have it later.

I too must avoid caffeine after 12- 1 p.m. and it’s a definite cause if RLS for me. Not big on chocolate so not a worry.

Currently on third night of no RLS after resuming the .25 ropinole and cutting out gabapentin 🤗. Hope it lasts!

I doubt that the patches will work, but giving up chocolate could very well work, as long as you give up other sources of sugar as well.

Glad you picked up the sugar aspect Eryl. I have found sugar to be a nasty trigger for my legs much as I wish that it wasn't. I agree with Involuntarydancer about the caffeine and have used it successfully to calm my legs. Same with nicotine lozenges. 1.5 mg ones, they've settled really bad legs, yet smoking is a definite NO. The contrariness of our disease!

I have to say that much as I love sugar and chocolate and all the other yummy foods that I now chose not to have, I would rather be without the RL (or at least minimise my symptoms) and have a better life than the momentary gratification of having what I fancy. That doesn't mean to say that I wouldn't love to be able to eat exactly what I want all the time, I'm no saint!!! If it didn't cause such suffering, I wouldn't be able to stick to my decisions regarding my diet.

I was startled when I read your comments. I can see the general foods advice for PD but was not aware that all that advice applied to all Neupro users. I am having to give chocolate more thought because of prediabetic but I have never worried about it because of the patch

I dont like chocolate anymore. I ate that much of it as a child by the time I hit my early teens it started to disagree with me a lot so I gave it up

Good luck with your new medication
