Loss of sleep

I’m new here and I am desperate. I go for 3-4 days without sleep. Then I do get some sleep but I’m like a zombie the next day. The bad thing is I never really know how many days without sleep. I am very weak and short of breath. All I need is a couple days a weak with 4-5 hours sleep. Do any of the sleep aids work with RLS? I am 83 years old and this just began about 2 mos ago full strength. Thanks for any thoughts that might help.

That's some hardship you are going through.

What medications are you on for all conditions?

What happened or changed 2months ago? Change in medication or food?

Come back to us with the information and I'm pretty sure someone will be able to help.

Cheers.

I’m really sorry to hear that.

Can you tell us something about you so we can give some advice.

How long have you had RLS- just the last 2 months?

What meds are you on? Most anti depressants and anti histamines can cause RLS.

Have you had anaemia recently? Low serum ferritin can cause RLS.

In the meantime you can try magnesium citrate at night orally and Epsom salts baths. Compression socks and ice packs can help as well.

I’ve been suffering this for years, tried absolutely everything to no avail...it’s torture in the extreme. My doctor prescribed Circadin which is a time release melatonin, a thirteen week course...I’m amazed it actually worked for me. Now the course is finished I’m a bit worried as she won’t prescribed anymore, I’m waiting to see what happens I’ve had one very bad night recently, not sure if it was this incredibly hot weather. If it starts again I may resort to buying some although that particular brand cannot be bought over the counter. Good luck I do sympathise with you.

What does your doctor say about all this? Shortness of breath would seem to indicate a heart/lung condition, one of the possible side effects of which can be lack of sleep - although cause and effect usually goes the other way, from insomnia to cardiac problems.

If you're going through the heat wave where you live, it started a couple of months ago, there may be a connection there too. I started getting breathless recently, and am going to my doctor's for a check up. The British Lung Foundation has some advice about how to handle breathlessness - blf.org.uk/support-for-you/...

Not surprisingly, just worrying about breathlessness can make you breathless!
