nerve pain

i have severe nerve pain due to another issue and my doc and I are having a great deal of trouble finding a medicine that works for nerve pain but does not make RLS worse. I am presently on 1200 mg. gabapentin, 30 mg. Cymbalta and 10 mg Amitriptyline. My RLS has been fine with these meds even tho the Cymbalta and Amitriptyline usually have an adverse effect on RLS but the nerve paid is still awful. Tried increasing the Cymbalta to 60 mg. but legs and arms went crazy. The doc suggested Tegretol but the side effects look really scary. I've also tried tramadol but it didn't help the nerve pain. Any suggestions?

Pregabalin is good for nerve pain but it’s same class of meds as Gabapentin. Side effects are fewer though.

You’re lucky that amitriptyline doesn’t make your RLS worse. It does for 99%.

I tried 50 mg Lyrica and sad to say it didn’t help. Thanks though.

50mg wouldn’t help. 100/150 might though.

My GP wanted me to try it while i am still on the gabapentin. Did you gain weight from taking the Lyrica?

Hi Marsha,

Yes, because it gave me a ravenous appetite at first. Then it settled down. I gained a stone but I actually liked that as I was underweight for my height.

I haven’t gained any more because the appetite is now back to normal. I think if you’re aware it makes you eat more it should be fine.

I don’t want to be on a dopamine agonist.

RLS isn’t really nerve pain...it can have nerve pain associated with it but not necessarily. I’ve never had nerve pain from my RLS-only movement issues.

Amitriptyline is not good for anything.
