Do halcyon bracelets work?

loops12 profile image
28 Replies

I heard of these from family in the UK.. Do they really work? I have gotten so much worse over the last 4 weeks. It’s never just my legs now, my back, arms and neck are driving me crazy! I thought alcohol was triggering episodes, I had a friend from the UK here for a month do I was drinking more than usual. It’s not that this last 10 days though. I am keeping a diary and the only common thing is lack of sleep... even when I don’t have rls I still can’t sleep. So until I can get my doc to listen I’ll try anything!

I wasted my money on these. Did sweet FA for my RLS. Alcohol is a big trigger for most of us.

What meds, if any are you on? Anti- histamines can make it worse as well. Low serum ferritin(SF) makes it worse as well so get your bloods checked. SF needs to be above 100 ideally.

Hi Joolsg, I am on pregabalin, Palexia, norflex and cymbalta. I also take nexium. I have Sifrol for rls but it’s not working as it used to. I’ve made a list of things to ask my doc, including getting my bloods checked. I’ll try anything right now, I can’t stand it 😢

I did. You told me about it after my original post a couple of weeks ago. Sorry for posting again, I only wanted to know if anyone had any positive results from halcyon bracelets. I thought that’s what this forum was for? 😔

Pregabalin, an alpha 2 delta ligand is fine for RLS, and Palexia is an opioid which should help RLS but Norflex and cymbalta are not good for RLS. Most anti depressants make RLS worse. Trazodone & wellbutrin are alternatives that don't make it worse. Claritin, a non sedating anti histamine is safe as well.

You are on a lot of pain killer meds so check with your doctor that you need both pregabalin and palexia.

Sifrol is a dopamine agonist, also called pramipexole or mirapex.

Pippins posted this about dosage and Augmentation yesterday

"Hi just checking in so the regulars on here don't think I have popped my clogs! I had a quick scroll through posts and see over and over the same problems with over prescribing doses of the Dopamine Agonists resulting in our old friend augmentation so here's a reminder of the maximum daily dosage recommended by the RLS EXPERTS not your average haven't got a clue doctors /Neurologists.

Pramipexole /Mirapex /Mirapexin is 2 x. 0.08 per day

Requip ( Ropinerole ) 2mg per day preferably 1mg

Neupro patch (Ritigotine ) 3mg patch

If you are needing to up your dose, if you are getting symptoms earlier in the day, if your symptoms are spreading into other body parts most commonly the arms, if your symptoms are starting up after shorter periods of rest and relaxation then you have augmentation

Put augmentation into search there are literally hundreds of posts on this topic. It is the most frequent problem on every restless legs syndrome group"

So, read all you can on here about augmentation and your first step should be to change your anti histamine and anti depressant. Once off those, if the RLS doesn't improve within a month, you could be suffering augmentation from the Sifrol and you would need to reduce it slowly while upping the dose of your opioid to deal with withdrawal.

What is sweet FA?

Joolsg profile image
Joolsg in reply toLanaCSR

phrases.org.uk/meanings/swe...

It’s a phrase used in England that means “nothing “.

I’ve used it for years but had no idea of the history. Having read the history, I think I may start to use a different phrase as I didn’t know it was linked to a child’s murder.

We have so many weird phrases in England that we’ve used for decades & most have grisly origins.

Actually, my first thought was folic acid, but it didn't seem to make sense the way you used it. We here in the USA aren't familiar with sweet FA...lol

in reply toJoolsg

Wow, Jools, i sometimes use the phrase FA, without the sweet.! and never knew the history behind it. :D

I know Elisse! It was only when I looked it up that I discovered the grisly Victorian history. I’ll have to use something else now.

The abbreviation stands for sweet Fanny Adams used as a term for nothing .

Joolsg in reply toRetren

Hi Retren,

Have a look at the link I posted above. Fanny Adams was a little girl murdered by a physcho in Victorian England. That’s why I told Elisse I won’t be using it anymore now I know the facts behind a saying I use sll the time.

I’d never thought where it came from until Lana asked me.

joolsg It was used fairly frequently when I was young instead of profanities. I can,t say I ever did it was more of a lower class expression.

in reply toRetren

A few of us on here must be more of a lower class then. lol :P

am sorry to upset your sensibilities but it was not an expression which was considered appropriate .Also I worked in a very poor area and it was used by the locals who were always asking me to speak so they understood me. Amazing really the influences on ones accent. I was born bred and grew up in Yorkshire but do not have a Yorkshire accent. I suppose that has gone the way of the dodo.

In Australia Sweet FA means sweet F*** all... and like Joolsg said its something that 'comes to Nothing' or 'does nothing' or 'worth nothing'.

tramadol is a synthetic opiate and works on pain in the similar way.

Do you mind if I ask why? Would tramadol work on nerve pain? I’ve been on a lot of different pain meds to try to find a combination that actually gives some relief.

Hi. Has suffered from RLS for most of my life and I can tell you that it doesn't get much better I'm afraid.

I've used several meds and combinations but augmentation is a big problem for most of us.

Alcohol is a big no no unless you tell yourself that it's inevitable you won't sleep for most of that night and day.

I have been on vegan diet since just before Xmas but haven't found that it's made much difference to my RLS.

Everyone is different though so no harm in trying and to be honest I feel healthier.

I suppose it kind of ties in with my suspicion that RLS and the Vegas nerve are closely related.

I often find, having IBS, that when that's bad, my RLS is much worse.

There are ways to stimulate the Vegas nerve and I have found some relief when doing so.

Simply Google Vegas nerve simulation and you'll find suggestions.

My current meds combo is the best I've found so far.

It combines highest does of Pramipexol and 2 tramadol.

I also take 1 x 300 gabapentine.

Would knock out a horse I've been told but for me it gives me a few hours on most night but by no means a cure.

Hope this helps even 1 person.

Thank you, I appreciate the info. The more I know the better for my doc appointment. I used to be able to take an extra Palexia and it would knock me out, doesn’t matter what I take now, it doesn’t help me. Tramadol is hopefully the next step..
