What are your thoughts

My neurologist is helping me come off ropinerole, at my request. She has put me on Topamax and I’m now down to .25 ropinerole once nightly ( from 2) and hoping to eliminate that by the end of the week ( we’ll see) question is, what are your thoughts on topomax? Am I jumping from the frying pan to the fire? Seems to be working for me, but who knows long term what to expect.

Dr Buchfuhrer's book states "There has been only one published study on the use of topirimate in RLS that found it to be an effective treatment. The mean effective dose was established at 42mg with a range of 25 to 100mg."

I think it should be fine and if it's helping so far then that's brilliant.

Well done for getting off ropinirole.

Topamax isnt a med thats used much for RLS that i know of. Its a anti seizure med so i suppose works like the other anti seizure meds, Dr. B has it listed on his website. rlshelp.org

I do have some perspective on this. I'm trying to come off Ropinirole myself, from 3mg, and am now down to 0.5mg, where I've been for about a week and a half. But I've been taking Topamax for about a year, for weight loss, at night before bed. The Topamax neither helps with the RLS, nor does not taking it cause any withdrawal effects, a la Ropinirole.

I’m taking 250 topomax Daily and haven’t really lost any weight yet but I’m hopeful, lol, but it’s helping me get off that god awful ropinerole. While the ropinerole did help, I found myself augmenting. If it weren’t for this site I wouldn’t have realized what was happening. So I’m fighting it with the topomax and I’ll see what happens. Sometimes I don’t get symptoms until I take my first dose of ropinerole. Hummm!!!
