I have just recently started getting the symptoms for RLS both in my legs and arms, it was only every so often and now its everyday, I am currently suffering with a cold so im taking neurophen and benylin for my cough. I'm only 25, not on any permanent medication, I work 5 days a week and I find myself getting so angry that im ready to cry when im laid in bed at night not being able to sleep knowing i have to be at work in the morning, could anyone please suggest some reliefs for me?
Thanks in advance!

Hi firstly stop the Benylin.Depending on which one you are taking it will contain either Pseudoephedrine, Diphenhydramine or Phenylephrine as they will all send RLS into overdrive in susceptable sufferers.Avoid antihistamines too.Try that first see if it calms it down.It may take a while to get out of your system about 12 hours.Get back to us if that doesnt improve things.Lots of meds to avoid if you are prone to RLS i am afraid x
You need to check the ingredients of any cough medicine infact of anything you buy over the counter.I would stick to Paracetamol, honey and lemon .If it persists see your GP you may need antibiotics x
Natural ones like guaphesin (sp?) Might be better. Also try honey and lemon cough sweets/soothers- Jakemans are great- but plenty of others. Some menthol can set some people off with rls-eg Vicks-so be careful. Keep as natural as possible.
I also swear by any sports cream that has menthol, my favorite being Icy Hot in the stick form so it does not get all over my fingers, my heating pad is the one thing I cannot live without, but some people like cold. Everyone has their one thing that they like the best, and there are many meds to try, also have you had your Ferritin level checked? shows how your body stores iron, and is a different test than a regular iron serum test. You are young and at the right age when it can start getting worse. If you take anything with Diphenhydramine in it, like most of us, you would have to peel yourself off the ceiling. Suggest you do some reading at the RLS UK foundation web site, or the US Foundation at rlshelp.org and better than that one is rlshelp.org. Also the search box is a plethora of information here. At 25, I have to say you are just beginning your RLS journey. Mine started at 14 and have had it for 46 yrs. as have most people here. So, we are here to help. RLS is neurological, so maybe you need to talk to your doc about this and also ask for a referral, if you need one, to a neurologist.
I drink hot apple and blackcurrent squash to soothe my throat and suck Halls mentholyptus sweets which I find really help control a cough (and aid a stuffed up nose !!)
Drink Tonic water every night it works drink at least a small bottle or two large glasses and you will see an improvement. It's the quinine in the tonic that makes it effective.
Sorry to say that is a myth about the quinine in tonic water as an aid for rls. You would need to drink a swimming pool full of the stuff and even then it is only good for cramps.- I suspect you will have plenty of that after drinking the poolfull😆😅
Drs are still mistakenly prescribing quinine for rls.
Agree with Madlegs. And to add, in tonic water there is only a trace of quinine, tested it in chemistry in nursing school. Quinine itself is now banned in the US, only to be used for the treatment of malaria. It causes hard damage to the wall of the heart.
You need to see your GP. They will go through your medical history, and may want to run some blood tests to check for underlying conditions such as iron deficiency or other disorders.
You may need to be referred to a neurologist, so the sooner you get started the better.
