Beady I don't think me or anyone on here can recommend iron or any drug or vitamin until we know if you have any other chronic illnesses (including things like high blood pressure, high cholesterol or diabetes or even chronic constipation) or what other non-RLS drugs you are taking, including things like estrogen, diuretics and antihistamines.

If you have no other chronic illnesses and are not taking any other drugs then what I would do is wait for your RLS to kick in one night and not take your usual RLS medications. Take one iron pill (I prefer iron-bis-glycinate) on an empty stomach and wait an hour to 75 minutes. If you don't get complete relief or at least partial relief then you can take your usual arsenal of RLS drugs. I wouldn't combine them right off the bat. If I got partial relief from the iron then I would do the same thing the following night only I would take two iron tablets. But that is me. And you are not me, so two iron tablets may be too much, Plus if you take any form of iron, other than iron bisglycinate (or maybe liquid ionic iron salts) then it isn't a good test because most forms of iron are impossible for anyone over 15 to digest. If your stomach/small intestine can't digest the iron then it won't enter your bloodstream and will just make a bee line for your colon where it will have no effect upon your RLS. Iron, and all medications, have to have the ability to enter your bloodstream in order to work.

Good luck Beady.

If your RLS took a drastic turn for the worse when you started statins then iron may help you. Statins block the absorption of iron and lower your iron stores. Believe it or not this is a good thing in terms of heart attacks. There's a lot of evidence out there that shows that less iron in your body means a lower risk of heart attack. Menstruating females almost never get heart attacks because they bleed every month and have lower iron levels in their body, especially when compared to men who tend to have a greater risk of heart attack and much more iron in their bodies.

So you can do one or two things to try to help your night time RLS. Can you take the statins as early in the day as possible? Then you can try one iron tablet, I guess any kind, as long as it's on an empty stomach and with some vitamin C. If it helps you then you have to decide what you want to do. Take iron and lessen your RLS but also increase your risk for a heart attack or skip the whole iron idea.

This is what annoys me about RLS doctors that tell their patients (especially post menopausal women) to get their iron stores up over 50. It never helps their RLS. Iron only helps when taken right when you're having an RLS attack and only lasts about six hours.

Oh and if you do try iron, please do not be standing after 30 minutes. Take good care.

I think you can buy iron bis-glycinate on Amazon for $10 with free shipping. I know that is outrageous for iron tablets that normally cost about $3 but it is the best form out there. I will post the Amazon link.

Hi. I'm going to try the Iron but how much Vitamin C should be taken with it? Should it be a capsule vitamin C or lozenge?
