300mg of Gabapentin is a low dose, you can go alot higher... Look at this website rlshelp.org and go to the treatment page, you will find a list of all the meds. Gabapentin is on that list, it should give the dosage of what you can take....

I hate the idea of pushing drugs. This Gabapentin is one that my doctor brought up to me so we discussed it for some time. Gabapentin is 300mg for one pill. You COULD take

up to 12 per day if you are a guy who's 200lbs. My doctor said that 3 pills in the morning and

3 pills before bedtime will help rls and pain, plus it helps you to sleep better. I chose not to go with any of that. I want to stop covering up the symptoms of rls and I want to know the real cause and fix that. All of these drugs are blocking your minds up and they are

not very good for anyone to be taking. I am very unhappy with sleepless nights but

taking those drugs is 10 times worse. They are hard on the body and not intended for

people with RLS.

Thats your choice not to take any meds for your RLS... Those that do thats their choice if they want to get relief and sleep. Your comment is not helpful...

He's just disagreeing, I think. I am thinking the same thing only because of augmentation and needing more of the drugs to

get the same relief. I gather from reading the many posts on here

that people have to switch around pills and go on drug holidays.

I'm thinking about starting drugs and then I am looking at the

consequences of taking the drugs. (being hard on the kidneys

and liver) I am not in any way encouraging Brett to speak his mind

as he always does but I am understanding his fear of taking the

drugs and I think that some of them do mess with the mind. Sorry

that I feel this way.

There are many people who take these meds and its saved their lives. The other option is to not take them, be so sleep deprived that they consider taking their own lives, as they cant take it any more. Lots of health issues arise from sleep deprivation, sleep deprivation can play with your mind. The idea of this forum to support people, its a RLS support forum... If someone isnt getting what they need from the forum, then maybe its not for them... I am sure there are groups that are non med only groups.

exactly . When my RLS got so bad before I knew what it was, that 4th story window, or the chain saw was looking mighty tempting! And, I DO know people who have tried suicide, and one who succeeded, all because of RLS. As you and I know and most people here, we are all different, but the sleep deprivation will affect everyone's brain the same eventually.

since no one knows the cause of RLS, we HAVE to cover up the symptoms if they are severe. Have you ever seen a brain scan of a severely sleep deprived person?? The scan lights up the permanent brain damage, not unlike how Alzheimer's damage shows up and lights up on a scan. Severe sleep deprivation WILL cause permanent damage, Brett, so I prefer to get SOME sleep with my meds, and avoid any more damage for now. Sleep deprivation is literally a killer, will ramp up diabetes, heart problems, and a lot more. You can NEVER make up for lost sleep ever. Your choice not to take meds, but I would not be here today without mine. I would have offed myself years ago and that is no exaggeration. I used to take Gabapentin, 300 mgs is the lowest dose, and it can go as high as 3500 mgs a day, and I was almost up to that at one point. What I did not like for aside effect was the weight gain and it did not help my RLS at all, remembering we are all different with our choice of treatments and how those treatments affect us. I will continue looking for a cause, like I have been since 1996, but would never stop my meds or I would be in a straitjacket, and that is no joke. There are all kinds of levels of severity of RLS, so let's remember that, please.

I do not plan to stay on gabapentin just for a month or so. So I can go back to Mirapex. I have been told that a few month I could try Mirapex again, Let hop it works,,,able

I agree with you Elisse. When the RLS gets bad enough, you either suffer horribly or get some meds to help. I vote for the meds...

in reply to Brett85

I am weaning off rls meds due to augmentation. However they gave me 6 years of sleep for which I am grateful.Infact I would go so far as to say they kept my sanity! Once I have had a good drug holiday which may be6 weeks, months or 6 years I will have no hesitation about going back on again and hopefully get another good few years.Glad you are able to cope med free
