Provale cup / RiJe cup

The speech therapist suggested hubby use a Provale cup to stop him coughing when taken large sips. This cup restricts the amount of fluid that can be taken at any one time.

The cost of this plastic cup is in excess of £44.

Does anyone know of a more reasonable priced one?

Thank you all for your suggestions.

That is crazy! That is probably close to $70. Canadian! You should be able to find "sippy cups" intended for toddlers. They come in a solid color and have a lid with a spout that has a few holes rather than a large opening. The type I am thinking of are the size of a regular tumbler. As long as you don't get one with Disney characters or Pooh Bear, it should suffice. And for only a few euro's, 5 or 10 I'd imagine.

Hi Peterjones

Re coconut oil. As previously mentioned, virgin oil is very expensive here. There is a cheaper version, pure coconut oil. Would you know what the difference is and whether pure is as effective as virgin? We have been using pure as it was already in my cupboard. Would appreciate your comment.

Take care,

Maddy

hi maddy how are you today !!! fine i hope \\ well in answer to your question i had to look it up the internet and according to one piece i looked at

apparently there is no difference in them only the label yet i looked up another site and they said the virgin oil was good for your skin etc and a lot of other stuff which was getting a bit to technical for me to write down for you \\ but they said beware of crooks who do somethng to the coconut so they can sell it for a better price\\ i believe that the unrefined which is the virgin coconut oil is the best mine is extra virgin coconut oil so im expecting great things from it but if i was you maddie i would go on a web site and look it up because there is to much to write about and i do not want you confused anymore than i have confused you now take care of yourself peter jones queensland australia psp sufferer i think one of the

At the point where I was researching the extortionate price of these cups I got some valved straws and they saw mum through. She only lasted a few weeks after this as her swallowing was the last thing to go and everything else muscular had stopped working.I wouldn;t go as far as to say the money would have been wasted but at the same time for the cost it would have barely been used. Mum would have needed more than one for variety and washing purposes. I got the straws from the company really useful things.co.uk but I see they have them on this link even cheaper

completecareshop.co.uk/disa...

I got the straws on the recommendation of our wonderful speech therapist.

By the way this link takes you to some excellent cups: completecareshop.co.uk/disa... again good value.

We just bought Mum one of the spouted beakers from this range - it is less "child-like" than the plastic ones. The speech therapist just said "a spouted beaker" to us so we did our own research - I think we paid about £10 for it online. I have to say Mum does drink better from it than from a normal cup.

Hope that helps

Hi, i bought a wedge cup from America $40, no use what so ever as hubby put his head backwards and it poured down his throat, try the straw much better but might need watching for overfilling. After all else fails you have to spoon feed the drinks i'm afraid. good luck:)

You didn't say if you are thickening the beverages that are thin. If now I would suggest that as a first step. If that doesn't work then one of the cups/straws mentioned above will be in order.

Peter, Sharyn is about the same which is a good thing. We are off to the University neurologist Wednesday for an evaluation of Sharyn. We do that every four months. While there we shall have a swallow study. I'll post the results of it all later in the week.

MaddyS, I have one Provale cup that the occupational therapist got for my late husband. It has only been used once and still boxed. You can have it if you want as they would not take it back. They would only be of use for a limited time as the head has to be tipped back a bit to get the liquid out, also need the ability to draw the liquid through. I also have a pack of one-way straws, unused. I used to look on e-bay and bought the straws from there. Let me know if you or anyone else would like them.

Hello sprinbank

Thank you very much for the offer. I have looked into this cup and think it may not be the correct one for hubby's needs at the moment. Our daughter is buying one from Starbucks for him - let's see how that works.

Many thanks again, Maddy

Dear all

Thank you so much for all the replies. This site is such a great help. The speech therapist left some "thick and easy" for hubby and our daughter is buying a beaker from Starbucks!

Thanks again, Maddy

Hi

My Mum has a similar problem but her head is constantly bowed forward her chin touches her chest nearly but Mum had neck problems before PSP started she has spondilitis/spondalosis as well:( we have tried lots of different drinking aids such as straws with ball bearings, sports cup with long straw that you don't have to suck as the liquid stays at the end of the straw but due to the brain functioning slower due to the PSP she ended up getting it everywhere and not being able to control it and swallow properly, we have now got a plastic drinking cup with spout that is good but we still have to hold the cup for Mum as she can't hold it and aim it into her mouth.

we got it from -

completecareshop.co.uk/disa...

Hope this helps x

Yep, it is expansive. But what can you do? 10 bucks drugstore sippy cups do not work, at least not for everybody. For my brother they did not work at all. We bought different sippy cups twice and had to throw them away. Because liquid was coming continuously out of them, my brother was not able to control his sip size, he kept coughing and aspirating. Somebody told us that he needs a cup that delivers controlled sips and recommended trying Provale cup. It definitely worked better than drugstore cups, but it had small handles. My brother has arthritis and the handles didn’t work for him.

We continued searching and found information about RiJe cup online. It also delivers controlled sips, but it has large handles. We decided to give it a try. I have to tell you, it is really worth the money we spent. With the controlled sips my brother aspirates much less and the handles are comfortable for him. The cup comes with a key that lets you set different portion amount. We played with it trying to choose the right portion, about 7 ml worked the best for him and we stuck with it. The best part, my brother is able to drink more now and seems to be doing better.
