hi liz

yes try the Lee silverman treatment

it is a mantra of THINKING LOUD and making lots of sounds to make the voice and throat muscles work

i know how frustrating it is not to be able ot make myself understood

Your speech & language therapist (SLT) looks after 2 things:-

Firstly communication, for some this can be a quiet voice or slurred speech and these can respond to exercises that are tailored to the individual. The Lee Silverman Technique may be suitable for some people, but it is a very intense course and therefore very tiring.

Secondly swallow. For some people living with PSP/CBD the muscles can become weak and this can cause difficulties with swallowing food and more commonly fluids. The SLT is the person who can advise you which foods to avoid; if you require to have your diet adjusted to a soft/pureed diet and if you require "thickened" fluids. If problems are left untreated there is a risk of food/fluid going down 'the wrong way' i.e. into the lungs which can cause pneumonia and can be very serious. Your GP can refer you to a SLT.

PSP Nurse.

We are starting our second round of speech therapy. My husband did not want to do all the exercises in the Silverman treatment. Not all patients are created equal. I struggle to understand, then I direct him to his computer. By evening I am so happy when he settles into a favorite television show.
