The brain is so complicated and more research is needed to help us understand what is going on in progressive neurological conditions. You are right we do know that there that in the brain cells that are degenerating in PSP that there is an abnormal accumulation of a normal protein called tau. This forms the neurofibrillary tangles. In a stroke there is a sudden assult on the brain and the brain has the ability to recover to a degree, and in some cases this can be helped by medication or surgery. In PSP the changes are progressive and there is gradual deterioration, causing the symptoms and problems. The multidisciplinary team are important in supporting people with PSP as symptoms and changes occur.
