My mum’s health has been deteriorating for several years and in January she had a bad car crash. After a two month stay in hospital she developed psychosis and has been in a psychiatric hospital ever since. She had an MRI scan a few weeks ago which showed the hummingbird shape and the hospital staff are pretty sure she has PSP. She has every symptom! We are waiting for an appointment with the neurologist to confirm it.
They have tried treating my mum with various types of antipsychotic medications but nothing seems to be working. I know that psychosis isn’t a typical symptom of psp but I was wondering if anyone had experienced psychosis and PSP simultaneously and could give advice as to antipsychotics that actually worked? I know each case is individual but I would be great full for any suggestions.
Thanks

My husband had PSP. He was experiencing some cognitive impairments and agitation. He was first prescribed bupropion to help with agitation. When he started to aspirate while eating and drinking he was prescribed Donepezil at 10 mg. It was like a light going on in his head and his swallowing improved back to a safe level. After approximately 2 years when his swallowing started getting weak the doctor increased his Donepezil to 20 mg. Note that an NIH paper states that PSP patients can benefit from up to 20 mg of Donepezil. Sending you and your mum my best.
I note that you said, "they have tried treating my mum with various types of antipsychotic medications but nothing seems to be working." Does "they" include a neuropsychiatrist? If not, consider one.
