CBD and everyday tasks

Hi,

My mum hasn’t received a formal diagnosis but the neurologist thinks it’s CBD.

She struggled to put her bra on and became obsessed over it, practising and talking about it a lot and she relearnt how to do it and now 9 times out of 10 can put it on. Then it was her coat, same thing, obsessing and practising and now manages it probably 8/10 times.

There were work rounds for this however she has now forgotten how to use the toilet. She will get to the bathroom door and say she doesn’t know what to do from there. Where to stand, when to pull her trousers down and mostly where to sit. She’s fallen twice thinking she’s sitting on the toilet when she isn’t. I’ve put markers on the floor for where to stand and on the whole she grasps to do that, but it is always facing the wrong way towards the toilet.

has anyone experienced this kind of confusion around tasks before? And have any suggestions for how to overcome it?

hello I had the same position with putting my bra on, but I always make sure that it’s done up on the hooks and that I step into it now now, long gone putting it on my shoulders and then doing it up round the back. I can’t do that anymore. my coat, I find that I put my bad arm in first and then the other arm. Hope that helps.no toilet issues at The moment xx

Hi Malteaser12 - the classic first signs of CBD are a one-sided problem with muscle movement, usually one hand not working properly but without tremor. Then problems with balance. Effects on behaviour often follow later but the sequence and which symptoms show is very variable. The symptoms you describe sound like problems with sequencing, and possibly with processing visual information which are rarer types of dementia which can be seen alongside CBD. My mum has advanced CBD with PSP features which came along later. She really struggles with sequencing things now, but since she is now entirely reliant on others it doesn’t affect her in the way it does for you mum. For example before she lost the ability to press buttons on the TV remote she was beginning to really get muddled about what button to press for which function. I used to leave my mum notes. Is it worth writing a notice above the toilet that says ‘turn around before you sit down’?
