In home care organisations and other support services in West Dorset

Thanks to everyone for your continued advise and helpful insights. I wondered if anyone is based in West Dorset a bit of an outpost for many organisations and services near the Dorset/Devon border?, We're are in Bridport and haven't needed to source and bring in carers to date but I think I'll need to start preparing for this soon as Glenn's PSP progresses. If you are based or near this area it would great if you could recommend or advise on good care companies who provide home care visits, possibly where they provide someone to spend time on activities or take on visits out, also in home stay overs ( I'm due to go into hospital soon for a few days) or any other service you know off. We have neuro, GP, SALT, physio, OT and will have a specialist nurse to advise but little else in terms of the practical care support and I'm finding it hard to get signposts or recommendations. We are awaiting SS care assessment💤 and whilst we would likely have to pay for carers at this stage I had hoped they would be able share local carers and support organisation info, advise good and bad etc but I received a not urgent on the waiting list letter . I've tried Dorset Carers and CAB for local info but little info or never answer Thanks in advance

Hi Millidog,

We are based South of Bristol so not too far from you. We used a care company called Network Healthcare, who were very good. I believe they operate all over the place with various branches and the carers we used were based out of their Clevedon branch.

We also used a live in care company called Elder, who will provide long term or respite care, and I would also recommend them. ultimately you need to chose the actual carer, so I would suggest you have a phone “interview” with them, to see if you think they will fit. Some were definitely a better fit than others!

Feel free to reach out with any questions.

Hi FrazRin 21 and thanks for taking the time to reply. I've just looked at both. Unfortunately Network Health care don't cover this area and Elder care only do for some elements of care eg shirt term. I will investigate them further thank you

Hi Millidog

I don’t often look on this forum but have just been scrolling through. I live 6 miles from Bridport so would love to get to talk to you or meet you, if you are interested? Ironically, I co-ordinated the Bridport support group for Parkinson’s for a few years before my husband started getting symptoms and was finally diagnosed with PSP last summer. I still meet up, informally, with some of the Parkinson’s group, and some of them may be able to give you their opinions on the care agencies they are using/used. I have found a lovely lady locally who ‘sits’ with my husband so I can go out 2 mornings a week but haven’t got ‘hands on’ carers yet. Not sure how we can make direct contact but will try to find out if you are keen too.
