Hi All, I’m hoping someone might me able to help. My dad was diagnosed with PSP in March this year, he has lots of other health issues (diabetes, kidney transplant, neuropathy, heart issues)
He’s suffered for a long time and we think his other health issues have masked the PSP
He’s suffering really badly with neck pain, he’s on morphine patches and oral oxycodone and has a neck brace and he’s still in pain
Any suggests on other things we can do at home to give some relief?
Thanks in advance

Hi. My husband Colin has the same, he takes slow release Oxycodone, 1 in the morning and 1 in the evening. He used to suffer really badly with a lot of pain in his neck legs back shoulders and hands and feet. I used to feed him so much morphine, caused problems with constipation and sleepiness. But now as long as the dose stays strong enough( we have had to put it up a couple of times) he never complains of any pain unless the carers are too rough with him.
Unfortunately rigidity is part of this dreadful disease. My husband’s neck pulls to the right but his legs arms and stomach are rigid too so any movement causes great pain.
Hi. You might explore Botox injections for the stiffness and pain, a regular massage from an RT might provide some relief... albeit temporary. Voltaren (now sold over the counter) Emulgel can be used as a topical ointment. CBD oil with out THC can help with pain, I myself have benefited from all of the above. Try to stay away from any of the narcotics, they are addicting. You mentioned that he still experiences the pain despite these - one tell tale sign of how of how those nasty buggers work. The brain creates more need pain and becoming dependent on them requiring more and more... it can be a slippery slope.
My husbands neck would be so rigid it would not straighten. Ago suggested we give Sinemet a try. It helped with nothing else, but in a couple weeks he was able to hold his head up. In a couple years I took him off the meds. In a week, his neck was rigid again. I realize it’s not normal protocol , but wanted to share our experience.
Will you consider complementary therapy? Such as Bowen Therapy, Osteopath, etc. Can tell you more if interested. P.S. I have PSP and am also a practicing Bowen/NST practitioner! Hope you will stay "PSP" = Please Stay Positive. Timbow
My heart hurts for you watching your dad like this. My ex had neck issues at the beginning of PSP diagnosis. His neck surgery was a disaster- they went in through the front and cut his vocal cords- leaving him without being able to speak on top of neck pain- then psp diagnosis - moral of my text - if possible, avoid neck surgery to ease the pain- can your dad go into a heated pool in a handicap chair- the warm water is so beneficial- you’re not alone.
