Hi grehound!

I'm sorry PSP/CBD/ etc. has entered your family.First, I suggest to read the PSPA Association publications:

Section 1 Introduction to PSP and CBD

pspassociation.org.uk/app/u...

Section 2 Living with PSP

pspassociation.org.uk/app/u...

Section 3 Caring for someone with PSP

pspassociation.org.uk/app/u...

Section 4 Later in life

pspassociation.org.uk/app/u...

Also the suggestions of my "chat" colleagues are wise and based on their different experiences. In my case they have been very helpful.

These kind of diseases manifests theyself in a similar but different way in each patient. The participants in chats like this offer practices and solutions to learn from, and through the "trial and error" method, achieve a quality of life with interesting moments despite everything.

I am not a phisicyan.

During the 8,5 years in which we was living with PSP I have been collecting our own experiences, symptoms and solutions and that of other members of the chat to offer some notes as a suggestion to PSP/CBD patients and caregivers. The mentioned notes are made with good will and with the best technical criteria that I could contribute, thinking above all in the support of the caregivers

Wishing the best for you and your family and if the notes-document with our experiences and our informations are of your´s interest, do not hesitate to let me know to send it by the private mail of this chat.

Finally, I have an "xlsx" document where the different symptoms are indicated to distinguish the different PSP variants. To send you this document I need an email address since "xlsx" files cannot be sent through the internal chat of this website.

If you wish, you can give me an email address for the internal chat that is more reserved.

Hug and luck.

Luis

Hello Grehound. I'm sorry you've had this diagnosis and joined this site but be reassured that you will find lots of support here from those affected or their carers. There is a lot of overlap between PSP and CBD, but there is also a lot of individual variation within those diagnoses so you will have a different constellation of symptoms to others. The key difference is really in the early symptoms. Both diseases involve problems with balance and falling. If you have an early symptom where one side of your body is not working properly then it's CBD. For example fingers of one hand not working properly or hand clenching and stiff. If you don't have this one sided symptom but early on have problems with your eyes then it's PSP. This means that your eyes do not move properly and you have to move your head to look up and down or side to side. My mother started with CBD symptoms and progressed to PSP symptoms.

Unfortunately knowing the diagnosis doesn't help to understand what will happen next or what symptoms you are likely to get but you will find lots of support and information in this site.

Please let us know where in the world you are so members can help you with navigating your health and care system.

Hi Greyhound. The replies from Messier and Luis are good and correct, there is an overlap in the symptoms of PSP and CBD and yes, a patient can have both (variant) and will be experienced differently from person to the next. * This only be confirmed by autopsy One will be more dominant than the other. CBD will affect one side of the body more than the other. There are others in the group that have more experience with PSP and CBD, take the time and go through older posts.

I’ve been trying to differentiate the differences myself. I am also a member of this exclusive club. My diagnosis reads “CBD/PSP or a variant there of “.

How’s that for an educated guess!

Sorry that I didn't give you more information earlier. I had just a couple of minutes before my PT and work was crazy busy the rest of the day.Because these diseases effect each person uniquely, there are general rules that put a person more into one category than the other.

I guess it doesn't really matter what the label is, it's a crappy label to have.

CBD typically present with one side being more effected than the other (asymmetric) - that's me big time - left leg and some left arm just feels like they aren't fully connected so I have a lack of control and a clumsiness moving them.

CBD has a poor or no response to the common Parkinson's medications. That's definitely my experience - no positive response.

CBD patients may have speech/swallowing problems plus the dreaded cognitive/behavioral changes may also be present, but that can be present in PSP also.

My falls are 99% backwards with very little warning - more common with PSP.

The slowness of movement I have (bradykinesia) is more common with PSP.

PSP patients frequently have eye problems and the classic PSP cases have slow eye movement and trouble shifting their gaze up and down. Sometimes an inability to control their eyelids or inability to maintain eye contact during a conversation.

I don't know where you are on the spectrum of "issues", but because of the uniqueness of this disease, you may not fit entirely into a convenient box of either CBD or PSP, but you may be more like myself and fit into the "variant" box. I'll move over, there's plenty of room in this box.

I look at the list if things that could happen and thank God that I don't have all that garbage going on. If I could offer any advice, it would be to stay as active as you possibly can, find a Physical Therapist to help with the little strategies that will help with balance and fall prevention. I even work on getting back upright because falls are fairly common.

The battle is in the mind, both figuratively and literally. Prayers for you on this journey.
