Hi my husband seems to have developed a new problem, he is having a real problem in trying to blow his nose, his nose always seems to start running when he starts to eat so he tries to blow his nose but can't seem to get the motion , he holds the tissue on his nose but can't get the action going for about 2-3 mins , then when he does it is so week that it is not doing the trick so he reverts back to wiping his nose all the time , he goes through at least 9 tissues at each meal , the amount of tissues he uses is not a problem, I just feel so sorry for him as he can't give his nose a good blow , he has not been able to brush or comb his hair for over 10 months and has a problem with brushing his teeth , so I am thinking this might be another stage of PSP, has anyone else had this problem ?Any info would be great.
Trouble in blowing nose.: Hi my husband... - PSP Association
Trouble in blowing nose.
Unfortunately my hubby had the same problem, especially during eating. We found using a soft paper towel better than flimsy tissues. Viva is a good softer one. Never really explored any other options as we figured most med options would be too dehydrating.
Hi I also have PSP and have lost most of my ability to cough and blow my nose. I also suffer from sinusitis and a particularly bad infection so it is a real problem. I also find that my nose runs frequently when I’m eating. This will sound gross but I use cotton buds to gently remove any mucus or snort as much as possible. It really helps clear my nostrils. Just be wary if you are doing it for someone else. You wouldn’t want to cause an injury but I am super careful. Hope someone comes along with a better idea. Take care x
That is definitely an issue that has plagued many people on this site over the years. There is an explanation somewhere about why it happens at meal times, but I don't recall. The archives should be more informative. Sorry, I am stuck at work and can't do a search myself right now.
Mum lost the ability to blow her nose but didn't really suffer from a runny nose, it just blocked. We used a little Vick under her nose which helped a bit.
Thank you all for your input it has helped to have your tips .
I have CBD and my nose runs at meal times too i haven't found any explanation why this is happening yet either but i can still blow my nose yet
my husband has PSP for 6 years and he struggles to get a good clearing cough started, several attempts later he gets it. He misses the sink when he attempts to spit out tooth past or mouth wash, lots of clean up each day!! He wipes nose but no blowing. He also can not get the motion going to pull his chair up to the table. He rocks in the seat, but chair does not move. I slide him into table each meal. He is still ambulatory with assistance of a cane sometimes, but some things just don't compute in his brain anymore, reaction time has slowed way down. Sad situation for all those affected by brain disorders. One day at a time!!
Hi,My husband went to an ENT for nose running while he eats. Dr said the nerve in the nose over reacts causing the nose to run. He prescribed Ipratropium Bromide 0.06% Nasal spray. He squirts this 2x in each nostril 15-30 min before meals.
Works well.
Hi, Yes, my husband shares this issue. I suspect it comes from increasing rigidity of the muscles in the face responsible for nose blowing. I find it's important to clear the mucus with tissues or Q-tips, as the person with PSP suggests below, because the post-nasal drip in the throat exacerbates swallowing issues.
My husband is the same way. He goes thru Kleenexes and paper towels like crazy. I feel so sorry for him. It’s like he doesn’t have the strength to blow his nose. It’s so slow. I want to do it for him.
