No choking food/drink

Hi all,

My Mum seems to have dropped down a level and has been choking on most things. She had a PEG fitted earlier this year and my dad is so concerned that he has persuaded her to not eat or drink any more. She has just had a bout of aspiration pneumonia, so choking is a real problem.

She obviously, like all with PSP, has little to look forward to each day, so I was wondering if anyone can recommend tasty treats that she could have. Someone from her doctors surgery suggested ice lollys, which I don't think is suitable.

Thanks, Julie

My PEG fed husband loved eating ice cream with Bailey’s poured over it. Greek yoghurt with honey also went down well.

Hi Julie. Custard and ambrosia rice pudding went down well also thick smoothies made with fruit and cream or ice cream. Keep experimenting. Good luck, Maddy x

Mum loved ice cream & jelly right to the end, we just had to be careful & give very small qauntities. She also liked "Pots & Co." desserts which come in a variety of flavours - chocolate, berries, lemon.

Hi Julie

My mum is in exactly the same situation as your mum. She has a PEG but was told it would be possible to eat small amounts for pleasure. She absolutely loves desserts - thickened - but has now started to inhale them because she is unable to swallow well. It has terrified my father so she has agreed not to eat any more. It’s all such a horrible situation and I feel that she now has even less normality in her life.

Good luck!

Sorry to hear that. My wife is also in the 6th year of her PSP and has choking problems. When she takes light liquids , she chokes but if we give semi-solids like corn flakes in milk or porridge, she is more comfortable. Some doctor friend suggested tube feeding which we have not yet started. We do not know when this will be needed. She has difficulty in swallowing tablets which stick to the tongue with liquid, but those which do not stick can be swallowed. We are making her drink liquids through a straw which is helpful, if controlled. We have to accept these as part of the future, what to do, God only knows!
