Reflux and PSP

Hi all - just wondering if anyone else has problems with reflux? My mum dx in 2016 still eats well (even though a bit messy!) but is struggling with reflux at the moment- she is on a PPI and trying gaviscon also at the moment to try settle it down but it’s not really working. She is no longer mobile and relies on hoist for transfers Tiredness is a major issue also and she spends more and more time in bed 😞 we keep head of bed raised as much as possible- Any tips or ideas would be greatly appreciated Xx

I have acid reflux. I take the OTC version of Omeprazole (a PPI). My reflux is not as bad as your mum's as I only take 1 pill every other day. I have not found that elevating my head is of any help. I am often tired and am napping more often but think that is the PSP and not the reflux.

Hello, my husband has CBD and has had reflux for a long time, he now takes 1 omeprazole a day and it’s very effective, myself I have an issue with choking, and had an endoscopy which showed I had a narrowing of my oesophagi, this can be resolved with a small procedure, but my consultant suggested I try omeprazole and I take 2 at one time each day, when I remember 😂, and my symptoms have cleared, I do avoid steak and pork, just to be on the safe side, I would definitely ask your GP, good luck with it all 🥰

Definitely raise with your GP. Mum had similar problems & I'm afraid we never sorted it completely. She was on Omeprazole and Gaviscon. Do you have an electric bed? If so as well as raising the head, put a knee break in as well, this will help to stop her sliding down the bed and remain a bit more upright. Used to encourage Mum to have her after meal naps in her riser recliner chair, rather than going to bed as this kept her more upright as well.

Yes we have an electric bed so will try that with the knee break and will also try to encourage more time after meals in recliner. Thanks for taking time to reply from your experience with your Mum - hope you are doing ok

Mom also had this problem... never found a good solution. Keep asking questions & hopefully someone will come up the answers you need for your mom. Sending hugs... Granni B

My husband has found that one dose of Omeprazole in the morning before breakfast helps with the reflux. Years ago, I took it for stomach ulcers and it was very helpful to me, too.

I have dystonia of the neck and other parts above the waist and gastroparesis so it makes trouble swallowing and very poor digestion but not diagnosed with atypical Parkinson's at this time.

There are certain things that cause reflux. I avoid food textures like dense breads...cornbread brings on reflux every time. Too many grain products in one day like bread, cake, crackers or scratchy things will bring it on. A few crackers occasionally with something like cheese or cream cheese, guacamole, hummus, etc. will help them go down but not late in the day for me. I don't eat gluten breads anymore but even gluten free bothers me almost as much if I eat too much.

AM I do eat oatmeal and add ground flax seed and blueberries with no problems or sometimes cold cereal with bananas. Fruit, vegetables or soup for the latest meal of the day and quinoa or rice and potatoes seem ok with veggies but only a small amount of meat that's not too dense or it gets a bit dicey. This all helps me with reflux. Also keeping constipation at bay and the flow of the colon kept moving helps the whole digestive tract. It's a process of elimination. Ask yourself what you ate that day and try to remember if it felt irritating to the esophagus. So far I don't need medication. Not lying flat in bed after an irritating food or eating something too late in the evening is a must. Take care and I hope something works.

I forgot to mention that probiotics seem to help all sorts of digestive issues and I am taking a supplement and sometimes drink kefir, goat kefir because of lactose intolerance but there is cow kefir too and it's high in natural probiotics.

my husband also suffer with this and he was taking pantorazole 40 mg every evening around 5:00 pm and if it is really bad I also have him drink 1 teaspoon of baking soda mix with 6 to 8 oz of water
