Having #PSP included in the storyline of a mainstream sitcom is great for awareness raising. Looking forward to seeing how the condition is portrayed.
The programme will pay tribute to the creator's late father who had #ProgressiveSupranuclearPalsy and includes a character with the same rare neurodegenerative disease.
So I watched it - thanks for the heads up, not being much of a TV watcher - I would have missed it.
I liked the show, I think it will be a hit. When it came to the part of the father, I just started balling - and I think because of all that was left out about PSP/CBD, the caring, the living with it - the sadness that goes way beyond simply not having a father available anymore for advice. This was a very Hollywood sanitized version. (And didn’t really look much like our case - mom doesn’t stare straight ahead in a catatonic stare). So much was missing from the performance of the mother on what we know would be a much more exhausting and worn out portrayal. (Nicely dressed, everyone, sitting quietly and neatly while being fed? Where were the crumbs, the spills, the towels?!)
All that said, I did like the end/message when they took Dad sailing (even though it has about zero representation of our reality in that mom doesn’t want to go anywhere or do anything for fear of missing her routines of being cared for- a trip outside her facility gives her unmeasurable anxiety; whereas for me it would feel awesome if I could take her back to something she loved to do), even if didn’t very much represent our reality, I liked the message that they are still in there, even if not fully accessible. So I guess I can forgive Hollywood for being Hollywood, but it isn’t a show I’d recommend to family and friends to watch to better understand what’s going on with mom (or me).
