Mum had the dr visit today and it seems she has the start of an infection on her right lung so has been started on antibiotics.

Can anyone share their experience of this please, good or bad as I need to know what I am up against.

Regards Sarah xx

Since it was caught early and meds started your mom should be ok. Follow the doctor's advice and watch for anu signs of it getting worse. Ask the doctor for specific things to be on the lookout for.

Hi Sarah

These are fairly common and quite scary.

My Liz has looked like being in end times with these a few times. Most often a course of oral antibiotics does the job.

Wishing you both the best.

Warmly

Kevin

Hi Sarah

Chris has had several chest infections this year. I'm very conscious of how he coughs and how his breathing is.

We now have a reserve course of liquid antibiotics here as these often flare up over the weekend. So we can nip it in the bud.

Take care

Anne

Hi Sarah1972!

The suggestions of my "chat" colleagues are wise and based on their different experiences. In my case they have been very helpful.

These are our experiences about:

A serious fall with serious consequences (hospitalization, surgical intervention, strong medication, etc.) as well as a serious illness (pneumonia, severe flu, etc.) are typical situations that can trigger a fatal process. It is not uncommon for the PSP patient to overcome these types of situations - but these situations once overcome are often accompanied by some increase in the PSP symptoms and a decrease in the quality of life.

Hugs and luck.

Thanks luis, mum has requested no more admissions to hospital. She was also recommended a PEG Bach in September but refused. They warned that she was aspirating at that point and would get pneumonia very quickly and this would be her last illness. I guess I just need to give it a couple of days to see how well the antibiotics take effect.

Chris refused all interventions. He definitely did not want to go back into hospital. His quality of life was so poor he was ready to die and he did.

I found it hard to let him go but I know I would have felt the same.

It's so difficult. What does she want ?

Hi jean and thanks for responding. This awful disease really frightens my mum and that’s totally understandable but it makes it really difficult to ask her question. In the earlier days she didn’t want to know anything. However when she was admitted to hospital back in September they wanted her to have a peg fitted so I then had to tell her exactly what she was up against. At this point she declined the peg and said she did not want to go back into hospital anymore. Mum is now on Pallative Care. At the moment she is doing the mother thing and burying her head and worrying about the ones she will leave behind. I will see how these antibiotics work, she has 6 days but if no change I will try speaking to her again. She is such a fighter always Insists on getting up in the morning and sitting in her wheelchair even though her eyes hardly open and her speech is practically incomprehensible she can’t walk anymore and her body is very stiff. It would be so much more comfortable in her bed but refuses to do this which I can understand.

Hope your doing well jean xx

I'm doing as well as expected thanks.

If your mother fights there are lots of people on this site who have survived many infections. Chris was also a fighter but for him once he couldn't even turn over in bed or speak or see much he lost heart and when he started choking on puried food he made the decision.

I hope she can communicate her wishes .

Keep strong, love from Jean xx
