Germs in Your Gut Are Talking to Your Brain. Scientists Want to Know What They’re Saying.

Several years ago I had suggested to reserchears in the field of neuroscience to look for "Levy bodies" among the neurones existing in our guts and to see if we could not find clues in studying those neurones. Never got an answer. So very pleased to see that finally they start to look there.

Hi, I couldn't persuade the link to work, but I looked up the article, it is very interesting. I first heard of a possible link based on diet, specifically the microbes side of it, some years ago. As well as my Mum fighting PSP, I also have a Dad with MS and a daughter who is autistic. There has been a lot of discussion within the autistic parents community about if a specific diet would help, some swear by it, others say it makes no difference!

I feel that in time they will get to the bottom of this research and will be able to help, my gut instinct is that; something that modern science/lifestyle does (probably for the better initially) somehow kicks off these problems. PSP is so new and although there have been 'simple' kids and adults portrayed in literature for years, I still feel that the increase in numbers of people affected must be down to something. Though I know my daughter would feel far less different if we lived a quieter life!

A very interesting post. I have always wondered if my husband’s PSP was somehow caused by his long term ulcerative colitis. He had 4 spells in hospital when he needed blood transfusions and was also dangerously deficient in nutrients and vitamins especially potassium. The whole of his bowel was so ulcerated at times, leaving scar tissue, that very little nutrients were getting through to the rest of his body and presume that includes his brain.
