This morning I got up early and drove down to the river and managed to capture the sunrise.
In April 2003 I traveled up this tidal river in my narrowboat on my way back to Derby, little did I know that I would be standing on the bank taking this photograph.
This time next week my eldest son and I will be going on a short break canal holiday, He will be doing the work on the locks and I will be steering, again I will be remembering the journey we will be taking was over the same route as my last journey before I sold my boat.
It is funny how life unravels and none of us can know what it will bring.

Patrick that is a brilliant photo, as ever! I hope you enjoy your holiday next week. How good of your son to go with you and do the hard work.😁. I am sure you are excellent at steering though. What is your route, and don't forget the photo's?!
Wonderful photo Patrick. U are inspiring. My dad's one love (apart from mum) was cycling, and he no longer can do it, he was still out doing 50km at the weekend until 77, when we think his symptoms started. In a way He's mourning the loss of that aspect of Him, but he now has replaced it with model railways he loved as a child and is spending hours doing same, I hope it can continue for a while yet.....i hope u enjoy ur trip with it son xx
Beautiful photo. I don't know much about where you are going and even less about the locks your son will have to work on......tell me, are these one' man locks? The ones I am familiar with are more for ships and ferry's etc...
It does sound like you will have a fantastic time....just being able to spend it with your son not fixated on CBD.......straight up joy!
Patrick, Thank you for the "boat ride" I felt just like that little boy in the video....totally enamored with the whole process! And to both our delights , there was a boat or barge going down AND one coming up! What a n amazing process.....Did the people going up have an automatic system...I never saw them get out of the boat and turn the handle to open the locks like the ppl going down had to do.....I can imagine there could be a remote of some kind that the captain can use to open or close the locks!

These locks are just as when they were built in the late 1700's . The gates have been replaced but the paddle raising system is probably the same as was originally fitted.
If you look carefully you can see the people who close the gates behind the boat going up walk to the top gates and open what are known as 'ground paddles'. This lets the water into the lock.
What a stunning sunset, I love sitting to watch sunsets.

Life is a funny old thing hey and when something like these conditions arrive in it, where as a sufferer or carer, it sure does bring it home that life is for living as best you can do.
A river nearby patrick. How wonderful. Life is full of memories of things we've done in the past and thank god we have them. Enjoy the week with your eldest son "messing about on the river". More memories to cherish.
Patrick, have a lovely trip down memory lane with your son, great to still get on and do things and don't think too much about the future, live for today. Guess there will be some great pubs along the way with moorings!
