Suggestion required on liquid diet

My mom is suffering from psp sinsce 2012, now she cant move on her own, she dont speak, and cant open her mouth, and even cant blink her eyes,

She is on full liquid diet.

So i want suggestions on what are options in liquid diet which we can give her so that her daily nutrition requirements are fullfiled. Pleade suggest, how much minimum liquid intake is necessary, and waht should i give her, her bp is always low which i think is due to improper diet.

Dad uses a supplement drink called Ensure Plus. It's also available in powdered form. Calories, protein, vitamins+minerals. I looked online it's sold at various places in India.

I'm very sorry for your lovely mother and you and your family. I think perhaps your mother's comfort might be the deciding factor in how much nutrition and fluid she should have, but I do know how hard it is to care for someone who has no way to communicate or make the decisions about care. I was fortunate that my guy loved sweets, so I was able to tempt him with ice cream and such. I wish I had any advice for you, except take care of yourself, too. Love and peace, ec

I guess she doesnt have a peg tube. Aunt Bev and I were so against a peg tube in fear that she would never be able to put anything in her mouth again but we were wrong, I watched a video on youtube and you can have things still/ She gets 2 cans of promote with fiber 4 times a day and then I use the suringe to put like soda, koolaid ect so she gets the taste of things she has to suck on it to get anything so it gives her enough suction to be able to swollow and goes in slow so it has less chance in getting in her lungs. Get a sippy cup that little kids use and put the plug just tight enough that it will either drip or she has to suck works great. I am really glad we got the peg tube she does not want to die she has to much fight still in her even though I cant see it getting much worse for her giving up is not an option and if she has fight I sure the hell do to. I hang on to the hope that they find something new every day so maybe if we hang on long enough our day will come. Lots and Lots of hugs

Try Ensure 2 cal-easy to go down high in calories and has vitamins as well

You can survive on it but need water as well so you don't dehydrate

I really think you need to go to a dietician so that they can work out exactly the calorie intake required for your mother. It's important that she has the right quantity to maintain her current weight and to avoid dehydration which itself causes lots of problems.

Did your mother ever consider having a peg fitted? This does make feeding easier, but like everything has its pros and cons. All the best.

Hello Amrit

I'm aware that it might be very hot where you are and so the liquid intake levels in the UK might not be adequate. Also that loosing salt in sweat might be a problem. So I agree with others here that local advice is best.

Here are some guidelines though. If the urine is especially dark and strong then she may well not be getting enough fluids. If it smells strongly then it might be an indication of a Urinary Tract infection.

If the stools (?मल-सामग्री) are very stiff it may well be an indication of a lack of fluids. These are the things I keep an eye on.

As for a fluid diet. We're at the stage of very soft food, but I have introduced things like fruit puréed with a little water to make a drink and mean to dilute and purée Liz's normal food to make it into a drink when she gets there. That way she gets a familiar diet that she can enjoy. Lassi sounds a good option too? I expect you have already considered that.

The good thing about puréed food is that it keeps the fibre levels up which also helps with bowel movements.
