Can you get a suction machine? That can help if your mother can't swallow. If not, you may be able to clear some of the saliva with a simple kitchen baster. We have found atropine eye drops under the tongue, available by prescription here in the US, very helpful for reducing the thick saliva. It doesn't work for everyone, but it has helped my man wonderfully. I'm sorry your mother is suffering so. I hope you can find some relief for her. Warm wishes, Easterncedar
Hi.
My husband chokes on fluids and saliva.
For fluids he now has granules to thicken his drinks.
There is medication to dry up the saliva, we decided not to go with that just yest and at night time I tilt his bed up at the head end which has helped. (he has an electric bed)
Good Luck
I completely agree with easterncedar, Atropine drops have been brilliant. We started with one drop initially which seemed to work but then had to increase to 2 drops. It is really important if you start on Atropine to maintain good oral hygiene as there is a risk of developing a fungal infection. Also make sure that your mum is hydrated because the mouth becomes very dry. My mum can no longer tell us if she is thirsty, so we ensure that we give regular liquids to her. My mum is the same stage as yours.
If your mum is coughing while eating and drinking then you should also thicken liquids and also remove high risk foods from her diet.
Are you in the UK? It is worthwhile getting your mum referred to a SALT, who will be able to advise you.
