Constipation: my husband has started with... - PSP Association
Constipation
My husband has Laxido powders in water or orange juice. They seem to do the trick. You can buy them or get them on prescription. Good luck! X
The staff at the hospital should have some tried and true meds they use....surely they have noticed he hasn't gone! Get them in a conversation about it!

Not a stage, but another awful symptom. The hospice respite nurses recommended suppositories, and I finally tried one last night. I can't go into detail, but it never had a chance. Ugh.
We were prescribed suppositories initially and subsequently Laxido. The Laxido has been very effective. Good luck.
Can somebody help - How is the different 'stages' of PSP defined?
Hi all, I would also be interested in this. Because my mother (just diagnosed with PSP last week) does not suffer from constipation. Instead she has difficulties getting to the toilet on time so she has to wear special diapers not only for the urine but for everything. And since we just heard the news last week, I'm a bit at a loss right now.
Mum lived on her own until 3 weeks ago, but suddenly cannot walk on her own anymore plus the diapers and all. So any information about the stages would be appreciated.
Thanks for all the advice have taken it all on board.
I posted this advice last year on constipation meds may be a help.
According to my pharmacist son, Lactulose is a stool softening medication, similar to Laxido. Both work on taking water from other parts of the body to soften the stool, so fluid intake is essential to be maintained or slightly increased. This generally eases constipation by making easier to pass but does not encourage bowel movement if stopped.
If the bowels have stopped or compaction taken place what is required is a bowel stimulant similar to Senna. Liquid Senna is good in limited doses but care needed not becoming dependant also can cause catheter blockage.
We were prescribed Docusate which combines stool softener and bowel stimulant which works well.
M's regime is daily one sachet Laxido if no movement after 3 days increase to 2 if still no movement by day 5 maintain Laxido but add Docusate liquid, this works for M. Nursing home have changed routine to introduce Docusate at day 3 instead of increase Laxido this seems fine for M's regularity no enema since Feb. Prior to Docusate M would have an enema at least once a month and general discomfort for a couple of days a week.
Hope this helps good luck Tim
yes ...assuming he is eating as you said give hime a shake daily w/ miralax in it ...a small amount in his shakes will make him go in a day or two ...no need to give full dose ...put fruit in shake as well ..a prune or apricot...banana etc....I been doing it for over a year ...wife hates laxatives and has NO idea I do it ...packing off is the worst scenario so I do it incognito....good luck
