So sorry, Jenny. Your son is awfully young for psp. It's a hard road. I don't think there is any subject more discussed here than incontinence. Until it happened to us, I had no idea how it can take over your life. We tried everything for my guy - drugs to tighten the bladder, drugs to relax the bladder, biofeedback, convenes, a rigid cup and hose system, and indwelling catheters of various kinds. Nothing worked well for us, but many folks report good experiences with convenes and catheters. We manage with layered depends. I urge you to search on this site and you will find lots of information and shared experience with this.

Does your son have a decent GP? When was he diagnosed? The success of the devices generally requires some degree of understanding and cooperation by the patient. Some find that impossible. Good luck. Hang on. Peace, Easterncedar

PSP is progressive supranuclear palsy, a rare brain disease that is often mistaken for Parkinson's disease. It used to be called atypical Parkinson's, but it doesn't generally respond to Parkinson's treatment. I'm sorry about your son's illness. Watching your child suffer must be one of the worst things in life. Even if you found us by mistake, please feel free to join. This is a very caring community, and there's usually someone awake when you are and willing to send a sympathetic hug. Love and peace, Easterncedar

Jenny please don't think me cold for just noting a Urologist. this Dr. though, to me, is the first and most important start. Especially at the young age of 41. Our Urologist told us what part of the spine responds in what sort of ways and then explained what we needed ....However I believe easterncedar has a much better take on it experientially speaking. I first made my husband a convene-like implement but more because he could not direct the flow than "time" it. When time did get involved, he could NOT go and he was given a catheter which he has had for 2 or so months, successfully. I doubt my comments are of much help but I do hope you and your son find a good long lasting solution...to a frustrating and maybe embarrassing problem.

Good Luck, Jenny and Son

So sorry to hear of your 41 years old sons incontinence. So young to be suffering like this. My hubby is incontinent and we went through different phases. If your son can help himself then you can get a hose like tube to direct to toilet, if not then tena pants plus an extra liner or external convenes, a bit like condoms with a bag attached. . These are successful for my hubby though he can't put them on himself. Once I read the instructions properly they worked ok for him. An occasional accident as he had prostate cancer before getting PSP which left him a bit depleted in the nether regions and they come off now and then. Get a medical opinion first and a referral to your local bladder and bowel clinic. Hope it all works out for you jenny. Marie
