Hi my husband takes for ever to eat as well. Part of the disease I am afraid. He is now just on all puréed food.

I would talk to your doctor about your mother having problems passing any urine. May be an infection.

Lots of love

Could she drink a high-calorie liquid food? My guy takes a long time to eat - it's a common problem with psp - so he eats less than he should, but luckily he loves to eat sweets. Inability to pass urine can be a serious matter, and may require a doctor's help, but perhaps she is not drinking enough water, too.

My husband could no longer swallow and choked on his food. It freaked me out to see how much wt he lost so we ordered up a PEG tube and he is maintaining his wt. But then he started not passing urine...standing there forever every couple of hours during the night. Dr sent him to urologist who told us that this was part of neurological disorders such as PSP.,,,not being able to urinate....so he put B on a temporary cath which switched immediately over to a permanent catheter....He has not yet had a UTI but he was healthy when he got one. He now pees about 3400MLs a day! I don't know what he was doing before the catheter.....But I know now it is a blessing! Good luck to you and your mother. Talk to her dr. about your concerns and her needs. You are her greatest advocate!

As PSP progresses you will need to change your mum's diet, by avoiding certain foods. If your mum is struggling to eat roti then try rice instead. My mum can no longer eat roti and is on mainly a rice diet and soft bread. It is dangerous to continue with foods when they are causing problems. You will need to be assessed by a doctor and a speech therapist to see if you need a Peg. My mum is now on a catheter because she was having problems with urine retention. Again it is best you go and see your GP or specialist. Sorry I don't know if you are in the UK.
