Super Pubic Catheter

Does anyone know anything about the above? We are experiencing problems now with convenes and our carer says that SPCs are, in his opinion, the best way forward for someone who needs a convene all the time. Any advice will be much appreciated X

Not much real advice to offer about the suprapubic catheter, sorry, since we have resisted this. I am afraid of his tugging at it. He had trouble keeping away from the regular catheter that way, although once he got used to it it was pretty good, but he really hated it. When that became dislodged we decided not to replace it and now manage very well with 2 diapers and a guard at all times. That arrangement often gets us right through the night, and is manageable through the day. I pierce the guard and the inner diaper to allow fluid to wick through, according to some brilliant advice someone here offered. Good luck with your decision. I hope someone has something more helpful for you!

Hello, can you tell me where to get the diaper guard, they sound fascinating, not come across the term before

Hmm, that's just what they call the pad that can be used inside brief-type underpants, like a menstrual pad. It has an adhesive strip.Maybe you call it something else whrere you are? So I put one of those inside the Depends-like diaper and put another diaper over those.

Ah after looking online I thought that might be the case, no miracle item I'm not aware of then 😪

Thank you anyway, every little snippet helps somebody, and makes our lives easier, so glad to have found you all x

That's exactly what we did and it worked very well. Visiting nurses and care giviers always remarked how good his bottom and skin looked. Unfortunately he ad problems with a distended bladder and enlarged prostate so now has a catheter-externally.

Sorry, I know nothing about the super pubic Catether. S has the normal one fitted. Have to say, it's the best thing we have done. Yes the down side is the high risk of infection and he already has had one UTI. But he was retaining urine, so was already at risk. S is one of the worlds worst fiddlers, but so far has left the Catether mostly alone!!! I think he is frightened of it.

Lots of love

Thank you so much for the replies. The convene allowed us to get out and about, but it has not been as good lately, ( fiddling?). Also, it can't be good for the skin to wear one all the time. I was told that the SPC is fitted rather like a peg, but below the stomach, using a bag in the same way as a convene does. Today, I had to strip and change, the bed, wash and, dry the sheets and covers and have a family party for my 95 year old Mum. Yesterday, whilst out for a meal, I had to do a clothes change and then later, a massive wash of clothes, and all the while, the rain poured down. Thank goodness for the tumble dryer,!X

A Catether certainly stops all that nonsense!!! Any reason they are suggesting a super pubic Catether and not the normal one? That is just inserted by the district nurse! I would definitely explore both and see which is the best for you.

George was goi g to have the super pubic catheter fitted a while ago but he had a urine infection and they could not do it apparently you are less likely to get a urine infection with the SPC hopefully they will do it soon, I agree with Heady the catheter is the best thing ever, only thing is George has had a few urine infections. We considered one for Kim, but was told you can still get UTI's with one placed. And since she already had a PEG, hated having 2 tubes dangling from her tummy area. I just happened to mention this to a hospice nurse last night visiting Kim (not doing well) and she said some patients can't get them if they are too obese (no longer an issue with my wife since she has lost moe than a third of her weight in the past couple of years). Foley's are wonderful though. I never leave them in longer than a couple of weeks and then I give her urethra a break for a couple days and then I'd reinsert a new one. But some believe it's best to leave them in at least 30 days at a time. Kim will often have a bowel movement in her Depends, which then that mess gets around the private area and I always fear it will cause a UTI. She has had some UTI's the show e-coli.

Robbo, when my husband was released from the hospital with an external catheter we were given the instructions to keep it in place until he could see his regular urologist. Unfortunately it was removed he could not go on his own so they put it back in. The topic of a Super Pubic Catheter did come up. My husband thumbs downed the idea when it was explained to him that it would be a direct line access from his external sub pubic area into his bladder and would have to be drained several times a day. It seemed like an extreme decision to me as he is faring ok with his external catheter. A good candidate for it is someone whose skin is breaking down or is repeatedly getting UTI's from a regular catheter. It is a personal decision. Hope this helps.

Best in your decision!
