Aching Arm

My arms and legs started to ache a few weeks ago--my right arm in particular. They hurt particularly in certain positions like when I try to raise my arm. I have had PSP for five years. Has anyone else had experience with this? Is it going to get worse?

Hi LyndaEllis my husband also has PSP for about 5or so years too. He often has pains in his arms, legs, and his hands. Nothing seems to make the pain go away competly, but he is on gabepinton that does help some. I hope you find something that helps you. Lynno

Hi Mum has had Psp for 7 years now , she originally complained of aching in her right arm she now has quite bad contractures in that arm which she has physio to twice a week which really helps ! Maybe if you start some physio now it may prevent it worsening x all the best Louise xx

LyndaEllis, the pain is probably muscular. Unfortunately one of the problems with PSP is that at some point the muscles start to tighten up. My wife has the same problem and she is mainly affected on the right side. so right leg, right shoulder, right arm, right side of the neck. In our case it was a combination of skeletal and muscular issues. When the muscles tighten up they can pull the joints out of line. It can also happen due to falls. My wife started to have problems end 2012 / beginning of 2013. I first had her checked out by an osteopath to check her regarding skeletal issues. it appeared that her right hip and pelvis were out of line either due to falls and / or due to the tightening of the muscles. She then got intensive physiotherapy / massage. After about 3 months we started to see the benefits and after 5 months she was completely pain free and did not need to use any pain killers. And to date the pain has not returned. However she needs to have her weekly massage to prevent the muscles from stiffening up. If you do not do that, then at some point pain is the result and gradually the situation gets worse and ends up with rigidity. So massage is the only treatment.

You will most likely not get it from the NHS. I tried. So you need to do it privately. There are two ways to go about it:

1. Look on the Internet for sports massage or sports injury in your area

2. Go to a sports centre in your area if you have one and contact personal trainers

The best thing would be if they can come to your home and treat you there, but that is not always possible.

You need minimum 1hour massage per week. And it may take a while before you start noticing the benefits.

Good luck.

Hello. Sorry to hear you're experiencing these issues. It is normal for PSP sufferers unfortunately. My mother has a massags, she also goes to sit down Yoga classes and acupuncture weekly and whilst temporal it gives her great relief. At this point she does not take pain killers and she is 5/6 years into the disease.

Wish you well and hope you find something that works for you. All the best.
