My husband has PSP and since he had a UTI things seem to be progressing faster.
Is there anything to help with the explosi... - PSP Association
Is there anything to help with the explosive cough my husband has. We thought it was a cold but the cough is not going away it is constant
Hi Nana-j. Everyone has a different progression in this disease, so what I've experienced may not be relevant at all for you, but the speech therapist helped tremendously when my guy had that explosive cough and choking. He was given exercises, which he really didn't keep up with, but I think something of the mindfulness he was taught stayed with him. When he began to relapse into the coughing after more than a year, he was given another referral, had three visits, and the problem again subsided. I know how worrisome this can be. I hope your husband gets some relief soon. Best wishes, Easterncedar
Good - something to try. I will contact the speech therapist. Thanks so much, Nana-j
Hi Nana-j I am on oxygen for my coughing and choking a quick blast of Hi Flow oxygen stops the attacks my Genertrition organised for me to see a respiratory Consultant as it turned out had an attack in front of him and he signed off on it there and then they can't explain how or why it works but it does thus far for me
Thanks Keith
That is good to know. I hope we can do something like that. Thanks, Nana-j
Hi Nana-J,
It's not uncommon for symptoms to be worsened during and following any kind of infection. Hope things settle down again soon and some of the suggestions help.

Is he taking any medication with cough as side-effect? Blood-pressure pills caused my husband to cough horribly.
He is on sinemet, apo-levocarb, gabapentin and trazadone. Plus he takes a high dosage of magnesium every day. These don't seem to have bothered him in the past but we are checking everything out.
Aspiration Pneumonia is a common occurrence in PSP due to swallowing problems. A recurring cough could mean pneumonia. I'd have him checked for that. Jimbo
Thanks - The doctor has not found anything to indicate pneumonia but I do worry about that because of the choking problem when he is eating and drinking.
hi nana j

lol Jiill
Hi jill, We have the district nurse coming to assess Larry again. We are going for a chest x-ray and the doctor wants him to have a pulmonary function test. The neurologist wants him to have another swallowing assessment. Hopefully they will find something to help him. He slept better last night - hoping the cough is a little better today. Thanks.
