'Findings have implications for other neurodegenerative disorders'

Very interesting, Thanks for posting this, edkor! I don't really know what it means, except that new avenues for treatment may be opening up with this line of research. It's hopeful! We'll be looking for more news on this front, for sure. It gives us more reason to try to stay as strong as we can! Best wishes to you, and to all of us here, Easterncedar

Hi edkor

This is a good piece of investigative work following many years of associated experimentation around this subject of damaged brain proteins being major culprits in progressive degenerative neurological conditions. I will not try and desribe this finding in the scientific context of other conditions like Parkinson's and PSP etc. However, I'll make an exaggerated and poor analogy that this study is like finding a steering wheel when your intention is trying to build a car.

This study has merit (and needed to be published to attract further research funding apart from it's significance in ALS research).

I guess it would be great (but for many reasons implausible, and idealistic) that those researching individual diseases like Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, ALS, MS, Huntingdon's, PSP/CBD, FTD, MSA, LBD, etc would pool their funds and research ideas to tackle the pathology of the damaged proteins in these conditions, along with all the mechanisms that influence the death of neurons and other brain cells.

Tackling these problems on a piecemeal basis perhaps slows significant progress.

Some may suggest (with good reason) that the huge amount of research money going into Alzheimer's may result in real breakthroughs that will flow on to other degenerative neurological conditions. I'm not sure how much is spent on ALS but I'm guessing not a lot is being spent on PSP/CBD.

I welcome your thoughts on this matter.

Cheers

T.

Dear Strelley,

Great plan -Unification of research = success. who knows one day.

As a side note I received an email relating to the 'National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke'. Is it an organization you have heard of /dealt with? I don't think I have, but then again there does seem to be so many its hard to keep track.

Hi Alana

I have used NINDS/NIH for their publications on aspects of PSP (often in conjunction with pubmed etc).

Cheers

Hi

I am no expert... but...

It seems to be pointing to a protein malfunction in the motor nerves in the body. ? Parkinson's type event?

It does not name the protein(s) involved.

PSP is caused by the Tau protein causing a plaque in the brain. Not in the motor neurones in the body.

I understand that the leading edge research into cures for PSP is also stem cell based. It is still in its early stages, I understand.

The article does not say an awful lot.

I hope this helps a little.

Best

Kevin
