Has anyone experienced rigors as part of PSP symtoms

Just briefly, rigors are usually the result of a serious (usually bacterial) infection. One common outcome from PSP is a lung infection (due to swallowing problems causing aspiration pneumonia). Urinary tract infections are also common with PSP as it affects the brain area controlling continence,

PSP often damages the hypothalamus which regulates body temperature and thus can cause problems that may lead to similar events as rigors.

Whatever the cause, rigors should be investigated immediately by a doctor.

Hope this helps, and all the best.

Hi Joey,

As Strelly already said one cause of rigors is infection. Urinary tract or chest are the "usual suspects"!! If the person has a PEG or suprapubic catheter the wounds should also be checked for signs of redness or discharge.

It maybe that it wasn't rigors as such but some form of epilepsy or fit. If the whole body was shaking and the person was not responding to someone speaking to them that might be a more likely option. Either way best to get it checked out.

We have noticed that Mum occaisionally gets a marked tremor in her arms/hands (usually if she's stressed or anxious about something) - we can usually reduce this shaking by holding her hand and re-assuring her.

Hope you find some answers soon

Take Care

love Kathy
