Rash from RT?

My husband is on Radiation treatment 31 of 45. Diagnosed with Gleason 7 (4+3), PSA 4.9 with all indications that it is contained in the prostate, negative bone scan, etc;. My question is, he is getting an itchy rash and some puffiness in his pubic area just above his privates. Has anyone experienced this? Anything he can use to help with the itching?

I'm replying not because I had itching but because I'm curious about the number of radiation sessions. My situation was exactly the same as your husband's as far as Gleason and being contained to the prostate. My PSA was actually 12.5 when I was diagnosed. I was put on 1 month of Bicalutamide then given a 4 month shot of Lupron. My RO decided I needed 27 sessions of IMRT and that was it. I am wondering what type of radiation your husband is having and why did they determine he needed 45 sessions? It seems extreme to me.

He is having IGRT. We had the option of doing higher dose or more concentrated over a shorter period of time, like 20 something treatments. Doc thought he would be better off to do 45 treatments with less possibility of severe side effects. He has other health issues and his other doctors agreed. He is also on Orgovyx.

After doing some research, I’ve learned that the normal course of prostate radiation is 40-45 sessions at a lower dose. What I had was short course radiation where the radiation is more intense, and is called Hypofractionation.

Radiation doesn't cause rashes and is deep inside, not near the skin.

Right or wrong, my RO told me of the possibility of a skin rash but I never got one. I also did 45 sessions over 9 weeks. I'd suggest asking your husband's RO about it and what he or she would recommend.

Ask/call the doc if not, ask your local Druggist.....

I never had a rash during 8 weeks of External beam radiation. However years later i was on ADT (firmagon) and i had a rash that i think was caused by ADT…After stopping it the rash went away…Not sure what to use…possibly either the oncologist or a pharmacist could suggest something to use….

I had proton beam therapy, so somewhat different, but in the later sessions (out of 44), I developed a "sunburn" in the areas where the beam was aimed. I suspect I first saw this in the later sessions because they were then focused on the prostate, as opposed to the earlier ones, which were spread all over the pelvic area.

No he does not, since posting this issue the rash has gone away. He is only on Orgovyx. He has kidney disease and takes some other medications but has never had a rash from any of those. Maybe just a fluke?
