hernia surgery & SBRT

2023 just keeps getting better…

May have to have hernia surgery. I have Sbrt at Ucla scheduled for late August, early September. I’ve already sent a message to Dr. Kishan but was wondering if anyone knows if the surgery, specifically the mesh used, would interfere with the Viewray Mridian Sbrt? Thanks.

Rayon mesh is transparent to magnetic fields and X-rays

My husband had an inguinal hernia repaired in Feb 2023 with no mesh method.

depends on the size.

My RALP incision herniated and mesh was needed. But it doesn’t interfere with radiation.

I wonder how many other people had a hernia discovered post-prostatectomy? After my robotic surgery 8/2019, a hernia was found...both urologist and primary said don't worry about it. After several bouts of abdominal pain...went to ER last month...and after 7 hours of waiting in excruciating pain....CT showed a bowel obstruction (small intestine caught in the hernia) and had to have emergency surgery at midnight (mesh installed) and 3 days in the hospital post-op. Perhaps possible hernia should be added to possible side effects of robotic Prostatectomy? This surgeon said it wasn't unusual occurrence with those patients. No one had ever said that to me.

I had a R inguinal hernia repaired about 10 years before my RP (not robotic). The repair failed 4 years or so after the RP, and the other side needed repair as well (that was just done in January). I have no reason to believe that either hernia was related to the RP. Interesting thing though--when I told my surgeon I had had a laparoscopic RP, he told me he couldn't do the hernia repairs robotically--something about scar tissue interfering.

I don't know that surgery in a field that may have been exposed to radiation is an issue, but I think the OP certainly should tell his surgeon.

I guess the question was directed to those with post-prostatectomy hernias. Both my Prostatectomy and hernia mesh we're done robotically. Even used some of the same entry points where my scars were.

had mine show up six month after RP. A external repair was performed that lasted a year then a laparoscopic attempt with mesh was done it has pretty much failed also, I wear a belt when doing a lot of heavy activity. Definitely from RP

I was told by a hernia surgeon to wait 6 months after SBRT to have hernia repair surgery.

Just to clarify, my SBRT is scheduled for September but I just got the hernia. So I’m anticipating hernia surgery before RT. Thanks for all the responses.
