My father underwent 5 rounds of SABR alongside a 4-month injection of Lupron. He finished his last radiation treatment on Feb 18th. The last three days he has been experiencing a lot of gas and diarrhea. I messaged the radiation oncologist and he suggested Imodium and the BRAT diet. Anybody have any similar experience or tips ?
Thank you

Both treatments have side effects which linger until the body adjusts. Temporarily a bland diet will help, then reducing protein consumption and increasing vegetable and fruit content will assist in maintaining a healthy weight and normal bowel activity. Kegel excercise is an absolutely necessity. Reasonably long walks and moderate weight training will help but in order to maintain both health and weight some cardio stress is necessary.I take .05 of prednisone twice daily. It prolongs the effects of my Lupron regimen, at this point giving me several additional months between shots, and reduces my allergic reaction to the drug, it makes me itch, as well as helps with my allergies.
I had a radical and later a radiation wipe out twenty years ago and am still kicking with what I consider to be a good quality of life. My faith in God has helped me survive this disease because it is a great comfort and will at help you through the terrible anxiety of facing life with a potentially terminal disease.
PS: There are many substances that a naturopath or wholistic health practitioner might recommend. One should be consulted. Supplements can improve outcomes and extend the effectiveness of the drugs we must use but one must find a good oncologist with experience in handling the management of this disease process.
This is so distraughting, I do appreciate Tal Allen and others great inputs and facts, but is it really worth all this physical and short & ong term pain versus going for quick RP surgery and having a lower but effective cure and recovery?
Then later if your in that 50% club, go for this radical long term panful ADT and radiation.
From my personal experience, knowing what I know now. I would not choose the RP. I would have RT with ADT. I'm not unhappy so far with the RP but it was a really long shot of a cure with my biopsy and gleason score. I ended up having the IMRT and I'm on ADT with zytiga for 2 years.
I had SBRT without the ADT and had a difficult couple weeks after the last treatment with burning urination and loose bowel. It passed pretty quickly. Two year anniversary for me last week and no urinary, bowel or sexual side effects. Your Physician advice seems correct. Hang in there.
Thanks for the replies everybody . My father took the Imodium which immediately helped. He has been off Imodium for two days and has not experienced additional gas or diarrhea.
The gastro issues all subsided within a month of the last treatment. PSA was 0.055 in May 2021 with cast levels of test, PSA was 0.19 with a test level of 17.5 in Nov 2021. So far my father is very pleased with his decision to undergo SABR(Sbrt) treatment at Sunnybrook
