Catheter burning.

Four days out from a Robotic radical prostatectomy at MD Anderson. Large tumor on right side. I have a catheter and the tip of my penis burns and has since the surgery. Urine is a clear and I see no signs of infection. Is this normal and to be expected for the next 10 days?

My husband had quite a bit of burning and was very irritated. Also surgery done at MDA. Are you putting Neosporin or Aquaphor on the catheter where it goes into your penis? If not you should!! He did wind up having a UTI that was discovered when the catheter came out.

Thanks for your reply. I have been putting Neosporin and does help. I will continue with it.

We also purchased a Neosporin with pain relief in it which seemed to help more. If it's still burning when the cath comes out, have them run a urinalysis to check for a UTI. We had to be persistent about it. The burning is common however. Feel better hun.

Thanks so much to you and Fuelguy51 for youR recommendations for pain relief. The first three days of this was very painful until I got your responses. You were life savers. Today the cath came out and all flows well.

So glad to hear it. Hows the incontinence going? It will improve over time. Do your kegels.

Zero incontinece since the cath came out. I wrote MDA to see if I should be concerned or celebrate. They said it was excellent. I had purchased diapers and even wore them out of the Doctor's office after the cath removal. I don’t know if its rare to have control or if the worst is yet to come.

I second the use of Neosporin with pain relief...That is what worked the best for my situation. Wash and clean the area a couple times a day then reapply the Neosporin. Use a Q-tip to apply the ointment around the tip area and an inch of the cath tube. Hope this helps for you...

Hey Hondo! I didn’t have an Rp. Good luck on that . But I’ve had plenty of catheters and foleys . It is not normal to put a tube up our penis. Discomfort is normal . Use the neosporin Hope is you won’t need it

Yes. The catheter rubber rubs on the urethral opening. You can help this by putting a SMALL amount of triple antibiotic ointment (not cream) around the opening. The petroleum jelly lubricates and the antibiotic protects from bacteria entering the urethral opening/meatus. Longterm use would degrade the rubber but for the 10-14 days the cather is in you will "do no harm,"
