Husband’s Unexpected diagnosis

My husband was diagnosed with stage IV 3 weeks ago. He was undergoing an MRI for what he thought was a ruptured disc. The “disc material” the doctor believed was impinging a nerve in his back turned our to be a tumor. PSA score of nearly 1,000 confirmed PC. He's 50, he chose to undergo the orchiectomy immediately, and has done 1 of 6 planned Taxotere treatments. Currently lots of bone pain, and cautiously hoping for response to the treatments.

Check with radiation oncologist ASAP, I had spot radiation to reduce size of bone tumors and pain. Very helpful. Do not delay, more damage will happen, need to move fast with high PSA. Also is he on hormone treatment, often done earlyg.

Hospitalization this week. Labs improving, PSA down to 43! Oncologist pleased, said we’d test again in a few weeks and it will be down even further. All numbers going in the right direction.

After 3 Taxotere treatments, we had to stop. Swelling was so bad, and the effects so severe he was nearly neutropenic after each treatment. Ended up hospitalized again after the 3rd with pneumocystis pneumonia (PCP) and in the ICU FOR 10 days... so now we’re on Zytiga for the duration. No real side effects, he’s nearly back to his old self. So 3 1/2 months post diagnosis with an initial PSA score of 980+, and PSA this week was 4.28. We’re breathing a sigh of relief for now!!
