Holistic Treatments

I've heard there's a prostate support group out there that has been using holistic treatments successfully in treating prostate cancers. Does anyone know of or heard of this support group and how to connect with them?

Hello Dgore,

I don't know of a holistic medicine group, but I want to caution you to be careful. Some people think of holistic medicine as the application of diet, exercise, counseling, and things like that in addition to conventional scientific medicine. That strikes me as a fine thing and may help, both to slow down disease progression somewhat (usually by only a small amount) and to make a patient feel better.

However other people think of "alternative" medicine as holistic, where by "alternative" they mean medicine that sounds good, is promoted on the Internet, but has only dubious scientific evidence, and often none at all - as an alternative to scientific medicine.

By all means, find out about holistic medicine. However if someone tells you you can cure your cancer by "balancing your pH", by cutting out sugar from your diet, by eating cottage cheese and drinking tea, by drinking "magnetized water", or by visiting a special private clinic in Mexico or Germany or Spain that uses techniques that the conspiratorial pharmaceutical and medical industries are trying to suppress - run! Using "alternative medicine" in that sense is a lot like using "alternative electronics" to fix your computer or "alternative automotive mechanics" to fix your car.

Agree,

I am going through Conventional medicine right now for my PC but I am also learning about plant based medicine and transforming my diet.

This sight is about the best one I found for evidence based nutrional\plant based medicine you can check it out at nutritionfacts.org

Dgore..., while I am NOT an expert NOR am I a Medical doctor, but since you asked, I will give you my 2 cents worth of opinion on "Holistic" treatment of PCa. In my mind and from my experience, Holistic treatment means using food, exercises, clean living and "natural" substances from health Food stores, etc.

As a 77 year old, 25 year survivor of PCa as well as a long time member and facilitator of our local Prostate Cancer Support Group, I have seen several men ATTEMPT to rid themselves of PCa by this method with very "limited" to NO success, some of whom have ended in death. Those who had the "limited" success really only prolonged the inevitable with slow, long and painful demise and have said, "if I would have known then what I know now, I should have done more."

Prostate Cancer is not like a cold. It will not go away by itself, and once it is out of the Prostate capsule (gland) it becomes a whole, much more aggressive disease which attacks bones and other organs.

However, age plays an important part in the type of treatment. But the younger the man, usually the more aggressive it can be and the more time it has to become a real or bigger problem. But, talk to your Doctor and DO something. Good luck.

I am following the conventional medical advice and also what might be called complementary medicine route. If you search Google Scholar for Prostate Cancer there are a lot of scientific papers relating to diet, supplements and exercise that show promise for reducing PSA readings and the advance of cancer. I generally only read the abstracts of the scientific papers.

Also there are a number of books written by prostate cancer patients (some of them doctors) that claim some success using diet, supplements, exercise and meditation. Suggest you search Amazon books.

Good physicians provide holistic treatment. On diagnosis he rang me promptly because he knew I has a psych appointment later that afternoon. I was talked with with sensitivity, referred to appropriate wide ranging information, referred to a psychologist expert in counselling about the impact of prostatectomy on married couples, went to an expert pelvic floor physiotherapist. After surgery I was helped with ED treatments (tablets, pump, injections). When I had a complication between Christmas and new year, my urologist cancelled his day at the cricket to treat it.

All of this was based in science and real evidence.
