ET and Prostate Cancer

Have copd. I was diagnosed with ET CALR positive, Jak2 negative not long ago and I am on hydroxyurea. My PSA jumped from 4.5 to 9.8 last blood test (going to urologist August 18 2021). My father died from prostate cancer when he was 95. I took care of my father through the whole nightmare of this disease till his last breath with bone cancer. Have not been diagnosed with prostate cancer yet but pretty sure it is. There was someone else on here with the same ET and prostate cancer. Main question here is the hydroxyurea causing problems with treatments for the prostate cancer?

Thank you for the great support group.

Why are you "pretty sure?" Is there some reason you can't have a biopsy?

That big jump in PSA leads me to think I have it. I go to my urologist Aug.. 18. I would be very happy if it's not prostate cancer.

Too many benign reasons for a PSA spike - your mind isn't your friend.

I am 70 with ET Jak2 + since 2016 and in January I was diagnosed with PC. Gleason score 4+3 and PSA 10. I am on HU and clopidogrel for the ET and have a great team of Haemotologist, urologist and oncologist (sounds like the old BT advert for those in the UK!)

I had biopsy and then a PSMA Pet scan which showed that PC has metasticised into pelvis, rib and skull. So surgery was ruled out and I am on Aberaterone for hormone therapy, plus steroid.

They are loathe to let me have chemo, because of the HU. The haemotologist said that he could control the platelets by balancing the 2 types of chemo, but difficult.

Since starting the medication my PSA is >0.5 so all good from that point of view and luckily very few side effects.

Good to find someone else on the same pathway - although I hope and pray that you may not be!

Be really good to keep in touch and happy to talk offline.

Stephen

Hi Stephen. So sorry to hear what you are going through. Glad your PSA has dropped that low. I had a bad feeling the hydroxyurea would be a problem. I go to the oncologist tomorrow for blood tests and a visit with him. Something he said last time bothers me. He said he was not concerned about the prostate! Another problem I have with him he speaks with an accent and I have a hard time understanding him with these dang masks. I am praying your numbers keep improving for you. Definitely want to keep in touch with you.

not concerned about the prostate. hmmm. that is a question. It could be that he considers the other situations more pressing. Prostate cancer moves slowly.

ET? HU?Can we dispense with the acronyms?

What are we talking about?

Hi WSOPeddie. ET= Essential Thrombocytosis and HU = hydroxyurea

Hope that helps.

Just had a blood test yesterday ( June 26, 2021) and my platelets dropped again from 656 to 561! So that was good news. My rdw-cv went up another point from 19.7 to 20.7. Hope everyone is getting better.

Saw the urologist yesterday Aug 18, 2021, he wants an MRI of the prostate and wants to do a biopsy as soon as I get rid of this diarrhea ( taking metronidazole, ends up I picked up a bacteria or parasite from my well water out in the country!)
